Historical Description
OFFENHAM is a small village and parish on the navigable river Avon, with a station (called Littleton and Badsey) on the Oxford and Worcester section of the Great Western railway, 2 miles north-by-east from Evesham stations on the Great Western and Midland railways, and 16 south-east from Worcester, in the Southern division of the county, Upper Blackenhurst hundred, Evesham petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Evesham and archdeaconry and diocese of Worcester. The church of St. Mary and St. Milburg, entirely rebuilt, with the exception of the tower, in 1861, is an edifice of stone in the Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave of four bays, north aisle, south porch, and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing 5 bells and a clock erected in 1887, at a cost of about £80: the east window is stained, and there are memorial windows to the Rev. R. Lawson, late vicar, and to Lieut.-Col. R. Preedy; in the tower is another stained window, the gift of the Rev. R. Lawson: the pulpit is of carved Derbyshire marble, supported on a cluster of six polished piers: there are 148 sittings. The register dates from the year 1538. The living is a perpetual curacy, net yearly value £302, including 20 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Christ Church, Oxford, and held since 1897 by the Rev. Charles William Anthony Preston M.A. of Christ Church, Oxford. There is a Baptist chapel, erected in 1871. There are two charities, Brent’s and Kerry’s, aggregate value about £10 yearly, which sum, with the exception of £1 given to the vicar for preaching a sermon on Good Friday, is devoted towards the support of the school: the poor’s land and the rent of a cottage produce together about £10 yearly, which is given to the poor in bread on Christmas day. Offenham is said to have been a retreat of the Abbots of Evesham, and the present Manor farmhouse is believed to stand upon the site of the ancient abbatian mansion: in one of the rooms is a fine carved oar mantel-piece, in the centre of which are the arms of the Haslewood family: extensive foundations, and fragments of an old building, were discovered about 1860, and the moat which surrounded the residence may still be traced: in the neighbourhood, towards the north-west, is a broad fosse, called the “Deer’s Leap,” supposed to be a portion of the boundary of the deer park extending along the river side, and belonging to the mansion: in 1887 20 skeletons were dug up in a field adjoining the Faulk mill: three of these were headless, and one was found lying upon a slab, together with several bronze coins: at the end of the village stands the May pole, recently erected in place of an older one blown down during a late gale. The Dean and Chapter of Christ Church, Oxford, who are the lords of the manor, George Hugh Digby esq. of Chalmington house, Dorchester, John Gibbs and John and George Swift esqrs. of Manchester, are the principal landowners. The soil is light sandy; subsoil, gravel and sand. The chief crops are wheat, market garden produce, oats and barley. The area is 1,215 acres; rateable value, £3,674; the population in 1891 was 563.
National School (mixed & infants), erected in 1873, with master’s residence, by voluntary contributions, for 130 children; average attendance, 127; there is a children’s library of about 209 volumes attached.
