Historical Description

PENDOCK is a village and parish on the borders of Gloucestershire, 6 miles west from Tewkesbury, the nearest railway station, on the Midland railway, 8 southeast from Upton-on-Severn and 8 south-east from Ledbury, in the Southern, division of the county, lower hundred of Oswaldslow, Tewkesbury union, Upton-on-Severn petty sessional division, Great Malvern county court district, rural deanery of Upton, and archdeaconry and diocese of Worcester. The church is an ancient building of stone in the Norman and Decorated styles, consisting of chancel and nave, south porch and a western tower containing 5 bells, four of which are now disused: the north and south doorways and the jambs of the chancel arch and the font are Norman, and there is also an early piscina: most of the old benches remain and some are earved with the linen pattern: the windows are later insertions: the chancel rails are of Laudian date there are 95 sittings. The churchyard is very well kept, and has some good modern monuments to the Jakeman, Clarke, Pope and Beale families. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £210, with 21 acres of glebe, and residence, in the gift of J. R. Symonds esq. and held since 1899 by the Rev. Frek. Seymour Griffiths, of St. Aidan's. A wooden church was erected by subcription in 1889, at a cost of about £300, on a site given by Miss Higgins and will seat 90 persons. Here is a Wesleyan Methodist chapel, erected in 1824. The charities are of £10 yearly value, for the poor and repairs of the church. The trustees of the late Rev. W.S. Symonds B.A. J.P. (d. 1887), who are lords of the manor, Earl Beauchamp, Mrs. Higgins and Mrs. Jakeman, of Lasington, are the principal landowners. The soil is mixed; subsoil, red mark. The chief crops are wheat, barley and beans. The area is 1,163 acres; rateable value, £1,221; the population in 1891 was 221.
