Historical Description

WOLVERLEY is a pretty village and parish, miles north from Kidderminster station on the Great Western railway and 4 north-east from Bewdley, in the Mid division of the county, hundred of Lower Oswaldslow, Kidderminster union, petty sessional division and county court district, rural deanery of Kidderminster and archdeaconry and diocese of Worcester: the river Stour and the Worcester and Stafford canal pass through the parish. The church of St. John the Baptist is a modern edifice of brick in the Italian style, consisting of chancel, nave, vestry and an embattled western tower containing 6 bells: in 1882 the chancel was restored by the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, under the direction of Mr. Ewan Christian, architect, at a cost of about £400, when the old flat roof of the chancel was replaced by a handsome waggon roof, the floor raised three steps from its original level with the nave and repaired with encaustic tiles, and two old-fashioned pews removed to make room for additional oak choir stalls and two reading desks: in 1889 the nave was reseated, a porch and organ chamber built, and the organ remodelled, at a total cost of £1,200, raised by public subscription, the oak altar table, credence and two Glastonbury chairs, as well as a costly table cover, were given by Mr. and Mrs. Edward J. Morton, of Heathfield, Mrs. Carpenter and Miss Morton: the richly carved oak pulpit and brass lectern are memorials to Mr. John Saunders, of Sion hill: there is a memorial window at the east end to William Hancocks, who died in 1844 and on the north wall of the nave is a finely sculptured mural tablet by Flaxman, to Helen Charlotte, wife of John Knight esq. of Lea Castle, who died in 1801: there are sittings for 466 persons. The register dates from the year 1539. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £272, including 218 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Worcester, and held since 1898 by the Rev. William Gardner Melville M.A. of Selwyn College, Cambridge: in 1886 a new vicarage was built, at a cost of £1,850, of which amount the Ecclesiastical Commissioners contributed £1,500. On Blakeshall Common is a pillar, erected in memory of the celebrated Richd. Baxter, who was minister of Kidderminster for many years; he died 8 Dec. 1691, and was buried in Christ church, Newgate street, London. Lea Castle, the seat of George Montague Brown-Westhead esq. is an extensive and ancient edifice of red brick with turreted tower, standing in well-wooded grounds and surrounded by a park of 316 acres. Wolverley House is the residence of Lady Knight; Wolverley Court of Major Augustus Talbot Hancocks D.L., J, P.; Heathfield, of Edward James Morton esq. M.A., J.P.; and Sion Hill, that of Frederick Elkington esq. D.L., J.P. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners, who are lords of the manor, Wm. Hancocks esq. Blakeshall house, and the trustees of the late Sir F. W. Knight K.C.B. are principal landowners. The soil is light; subsoil, sandstone. The chief crops are barley and wheat and market garden produce. The area is 5,532 acres; rateable value, £11,023; the civil parish contained in 1891 a population of 2,860, exclusive of 260 in the ecclesiastical district of Cookley.

Blakeshall is 1 ½ miles north, Kingsford 2 miles north-by-west and Horseley 2 north-west.

On the Common is a Mission chapel, built by the late Mr. William Hancocks, and now used by the vicar for church purposes.

Cookley is an ecclesiastical district formed out of this parish in 1849.

Grammar, endowed by William Sebright in 1620 & reconstituted in 1877 under a new scheme it is now conducted as a high class modern school, boys being prepared for university & professional examinations; there are now (1900) 125 boys: the elementary schools for boys & girls & the infants school given below are on the same foundation. The trust is administered by a board of 11 governors; John Elliot B.A. Trinity College, Dublin, headmaster; E. J. Inman B.A., T. H. Tandy and B. T. Greenwood, assistant masters.
