Historical Description

Aberford or Abberford, about nine miles south from Wetherby, in Camden’s time was noted for its manufacture of pins, which were in great request among the ladies: it is situated on the great Roman causeway, now perfect on the south side of the river Cock. It has a market on Wednesday.—Near the river are the ruins of an old fortification called Castlecary.

The town, a long straggling place, stands on a rock of limestone, and the houses are built of stone: the population is about 700. From Aberford to Brotherton, near Ferrybridge, the country is almost entirely a limestone rock. At Parlington, about a mile southward, is the agreeable mansion of the late Sir Thomas Gascoigne, by whose death that ancient family name is extinct.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

ABERFORD is a large village and parish situated on the Cock rivulet, surrounded by beautiful richly wooded scenery, and is a polling place for the Eastern division of the Riding, about 3 miles north from Garforth railway station, 5 southwest from Tadcaster and 8 north-east from Leeds, partly in the lower division of Skyrack wapentake and partly in that of Barkatone Ash, in the county court district and union of Tadcaster, archdeaconry and diocese of York, rural deanery of Pontefract; it is lighted with gas and contains a number of good houses; the old coach road from London to Edinburgh passes through it. The church of st. Richard (or more properly Richarius, Latin for S. Riquier) is a fine stone building consisting of chancel with aisles, nave with aisles, and square embattled tower surmounted by an octagonal spire containing 4 bells and a clock: with the exception of the tower, spire and chancel, the whole structure was rebuilt in 1861. The register dates from the year 1540, but the early part is very obscure. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £300 with residence, in the gift of Oriel College, Oxford, and held by the Rev. Charles Page Eden MA. canon of York, and formerly fellow of that college. The Wesleyans have a chapel, and the Catholics a chapel and a school. Becca Hall, the property of Col. Markham, and occupied by Lewis R. Starkey esq. J.P. is a mansion of local stone, enlarged at various times, and standing about a mile from the village in a park of 100 acres, surrounded by beautiful wooded scenery. Col. Gascoigne, lord of the manor, and Col. Markham are the chief landowners. There are almshouses for four aged men and four aged women, being former tenants on the Parlington estate, founded in 1844 by Mrs. Gascoigne and Lady Ashtown, in memory of Richard Oliver Gascoigne esq. their father, and Thomas Oliver Gascoigne esq. and Richard silver Gascoigne esq. their brothers; the income of this charity amounts to £300 yearly, and its buildings, in the Gothic style, include a fine central tower with clock, a dining hall at the north end and at the south end a chapel. The soil is mostly limestone; subsoil limestone rock. The chief crops are wheat, barley and turnips. The parish, including the townships of Aberford proper, Sturton and Parlington, has an area of 4,227 acres. The population of the township in 1871 was 619; area 1,530 acres; rateable value, £ 517; population of the entire parish, 886.

Part of the town of Aberford is within the limits of Lotherton, a township in the parish of Sherburn.
