Sturton History

Sturton is a township in the parish, 2 miles south from Aberford, and one mile equidistant from Garforth and Micklefield stations on the North Eastern railway. In the neighbourhood are lime quarries and several extensive collieries belonging to Lady Ashtown and Col. F. C. T. Gascoigne; the latter is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The area is 871 acres; rateable value £2,806. The population in 1871 was 54.
