Historical Description

ACOMB is a township and large village and parish, 2 miles west from York and 12 east from Wetherby, in the Northern division of the Riding, but being in the ainsty of the city of York is for Parliamentary purposes included in the North Ridirig, York county court district, Great Ouseburn union, Ainsty rural deanery, archdeaconry and diocese of York, pleasantly situated on the York and Wetherby turnpike road. The church of st. Stephen is a handsome Gothic building of stone, standing on a bold eminence, surrounded by trees, above which rises its well-proportioned spire, which may be seen, from a great distance; the church consists besides of chancel and nave; the former has an open-timbered roof, and two ancient carved chairs, one on each side of the communion table; this part of the church was restored by James Earnshaw esq. who is therein buried: the churchyard has been enlarged, the land having been given by Mrs. Swan and the Misses Percival. The register dates from the year 1665, but is very fragmentary. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £190 with 43a. 3r. 13p. in the gift of Francis Barlow esq. and held by the Rev. Robert Percy Trevor Tennent. There are chapels for Wesleyans and Primitive Methodists, also a United Methodist Free Church. In the parish are the York Water Works and the kennels of the York and Ainsty Fox Hounds. Brickmaking is carried on. Acomb Hall, situated at the east end of the village, is occupied by Capt. T. S. Starkey, Acomb Park is the seat of Major G. F. Lees: the house is pleasantly situate in extensive pleasure grounds, about 1 mile from the village. Acomb Priory is the seat of Joseph Johnson Leeman esq. M.P. The lord of the manor is Francis Barlow esq. who is also the principal landowner, but there are a few smaller owners. The soil is chiefly sandy; the subsoil is sand and clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats, turnips and seeds. The area is 1,580 acres; rateable value, £10,040; population in 1871, 963; the area of the entire parish is 2,047 acres; population in 1871, 1,083.

The National school was erected by the Rev. G. F. Barlow in 1854: it has since been enlarged, and is supported by subscription, the children’s pence and a government grant; Rd.W. Brookes, master; Mrs. Maria Borrell, mistrs.
