Historical Description

ADDINGHAM is a township, parish and village, and polling place for the Northern division of the Riding, 6 miles east from Skipton, 7 north-east from Keighley, and 9 northwest from Otley, in the eastern division of Staincliffe and Ewcross wapentake, Skipton union and county court district, rural deanery of south Craven, archdeaconry of Craven and diocese of Ripon, situated on the river Wharfe and the road from Skipton to Otley. The church of st. Peter is a stone building in the Norman style, restored in 1858, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, tower and a peal of 6 bells, dating from 1780; in the chancel are two stained windows, and three in the nave to members of the Coates family: there are several monuments and two brasses, one to Cornet Walmsley (1650) and another to the Rev. W. Thompson (1780). The register, which is not in very good condition, dates from 1570. The living is a rectory, yearly value £360 with residence and about 20 acres of glebe, in the gift of and held by the Rev. William Thompson BA. Of Jesus College, Cambridge. There are chapels for the Wesleyans and Primitive Methodists. Here are also a Mechanics' Institute and reading-room. The charities are of about £14 yearly value. A cattle fair is held on Easter Tuesday. Fatfield Hall, on the bank of the Wharfe, built by the Earl of Burlington, now the property of J. Cunliffe Kay esq. and occupied by Richard Henry Hay esq. is a stone mansion, standing in a park of 100 acres, and has a fine view of the country looking east. Richard smith esq. is lord of the manor, and J. Cunliffe Kay esq. JP. is chief landowner. The soil is rich mould; the subsoil gravel. The parish is chiefly pasture land. The population of the township in 1871 was 1,888, and the area 3,198 acres; rateable value, £5,858. The population of the entire parish in 1871 was 1,877; area 3,515 acres.
