Beamsley History
Beamsley is a township 2 miles north of Addingham on the opposite bank of the Wharfe, and is partly in the parish of Skipton, from which town it is 6 miles east, and contains 1,586 acres. Beamsley Hall, belonging to the Duke of Devonshire, and pleasantly situated in a small park skirted by the river Wharfe, was originally the seat of the Claphams and Morleys, and is now occupied by Easton Gibb esq.: part of the building is old and retains the armorial bearings of its ancient possessors. Beamsley Hospital is endowed with £357 yearly for 13 poor widows, who are admitted by sir Henry James Tufton, the owner of Skipton Castle, and chosen from the tenants on his estate. The population in 1871 was 209, viz.: in Addingham parish, 39, with an area of 317 acres; rateable value, £398; and in Skipton parish, 170; area, 1,843 acres; rateable value, £1,266.
