Historical Description

Addle church is built of small square stones, like the Roman wall and multangular town at York, and is evidently of great antiquity.

At Cockridge, a hamlet in this parish, a small village, formerly part of the possessions of the abbey, Roman coins have been frequently dug up; and on the moor not far from Addle-mill, in the year 1702, were discovered traces of a Roman town. Among the ruins were many fragments of urns and pottery, with the remains of a large aqueduct in stone. At a short distance from hence is a Roman camp, about four chains by five with a single vallum. Two inscriptions were found, with a bust in relief over a third, which was destroyed by the labourers. Mr. Gough, in his Camden's Britannia, has given a plate of these stones and inscriptions.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

ADEL (or Addle-cum-Eccup) is a township, parish and village, 5 miles north-north-west from Leeds, 5 ½; southeast from Otley and 2 north-east from Horsforth railway station; it is in the Eastern division of the Riding, upper division of the wapentake of Skyrack, Leeds petty sessional division and county court district, Wharfedale union, rural deanery of Whitkirk, archdeaconry of Craven and diocese of Ripon. The church of st. John the Baptist is in the Norman style, consisting of chancel and nave, with small belfry containing 3 bells; originally there was but 1 large bell, which in 1839 was re-cast into the 3 in use: it was built about the time of King Stephen, of which period the chancel arch, still perfect, is a most beautiful specimen: the porch is another fine specimen of Norman work, and is in very good preservation; there is an old oak register chest; the eastern window, now removed to the new vestry, is stained with various armorial bearings of the Arthington family, dated 1681, and there are also small memorial windows in the chancel to the memory of Thomas Kirke, of Cookridge (1706), the Rev. Mr. Jackson, rector here in 1766, and George Hutchinson, of Adel (1826): there are no monuments and but one brass, to the Rev. John Harker, dated 1761: the font consists of a basin of ancient date, mounted on a modern base: the church was thoroughly restored by G. E. Street esq. R.A. in 1879; a new organ being added and the whole re-seated with open carved oak sittings; the roof was at the same time raised to its original pitch, and the vestry entirely rebuilt. The register dates from the year 1606, and is in good preservation. The living is a rectory, yearly value £850; the Rev. Arthur Standidge B.A. Of Christ’s College, Cambridge, is rector and patron. Bleaching is carried on here. Kirk’s Charity consists of two farms, now producing £80 yearly for the poor. The Leeds Boys’ Reformatory, for the reformation of juvenile offenders, was opened here in December 1857, the average number of boys being now 130. The Headingley-cum-Burley Cemetery, situated at Lawnswood, was opened in December 1875, and has an area of about 11 acres, with two mortuary chapels. The society of Friends also have a burial ground at New Adel. There are evidences of an old Roman station here, supposed to have been the Burgodurum of the Romans; many curious monumental stones of very ancient date have been discovered. H. W. Wormald esq. is lord of the manor of Cookridge and Messrs. Eddison Brothers of that of Adel, and they, with the Earl of Harewood and Rev. T. Sheepshanks, are the principal landowners. The soil is clayey; the subsoil is clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley and potatoes. The acreage of Adel Only is 1,030a. 3r. 31p. and with Eccup 4,890a. The population of the township in 1871 was 970. The area of the entire parish is 7,156 acres; rateable value of township, which includes Adel, Eccup and Cookridge, £11,340; population, 1,357.
