Hampole History

Hampole is a township and small village in the parish of Adwick-le-street, from which place it is 2 ½ miles north-west, pleasantly situated on the Doncaster and Wakefield turnpike road and on a small rivulet. There is a small chapel in the village for all creeds: this chapel, erected on the site of the old Priory, was built at the expense of the late Lord, Rendlesham and intended as a chapel of ease to the parish church; it continued as such for a lengthened period, but for the want of a stipend the Church service has long since been discontinued, and the building is now lent to all denominations. There are some remains of the old Priory. C.S. A. Thellusson esq. is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The area Is 1,301 acres; rateable value, £2,748; population in 1871, 143.
