Historical Description

AINDERBY-STEEPLE is a parish, township and village, standing on elevated ground, and deriving its appellation from its church tower or steeple, conspicuous for miles around; it is half a mile south-east from Ainderby station on the extension of the North Eastern railway from Northallerton to Hawes, 3 miles south-west from Northallerton, 4 ¾ north-east from Bedale, 33 ½ from York and 224 ¼ from London, and in the Richmond division of the Riding, wapentake of East Gilling, petty sessional division of Allertonshire, Northallerton union and county court district, rural deanery of East Richmond, archdeaconry of Richmond and diocese of Ripon. The church of St. Helen is an ancient building of stone in the Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch, organ chamber and an embattled western tower containing 3 bells: the stained east window is a memorial to Thomas Booth esq. and that at the west end to the late W. Jacques esq. both of Warlaby, and there are others: the church was restored in 1870, and an organ chamber and organ have since been added at a cost of £500, as a memorial to the Rev. Joseph Carter Raw B.A. for 37 years vicar: there are 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1668. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £196, including 27 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Ripon, and held since 1910 by the Rev. Robert Bailey Nesbit B.A. of Hatfield Hall, Durham. The tithe, amounting to £511, is impropriated. The principal landowners are John Hutton esq. of Solberge Hall, John Carter-squire esq. and Henry Preston esq. The soil is alluvial; subsoil, clay and gravel. The chief crops are potatoes, wheat, oats and barley. The area is 1,158 acres; rateable value, £2,367; the population in 1911 was 235, and of the ecclesiastical parish, Ainderby steeple St. Helen and Warlaby, 611.
