Morton-upon-Swale History

MORTON-UPON-SWALE is a township and straggling village in the parish of Ainderby-Steeple, on the east bank of the river swale, 4 miles west-by-south from Northallerton. Ainderby railway station is in this village. There is a Wesleyan chapel, erected in 1815, and a United Methodist chapel, in 1870. The Earl of Harewood K.C.V.O. is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The area is 1,518 acres of land and 24 of water; rateable value, £2,277; the population in 1911 was 188.
