Historical Description

Aldborough, on the river Wharfe, a place of great antiquity, supposed to have been the Isurium Brigantum, mentioned above.—The present town of Aldborough contains about 500 inhabitants, but with respect to its buildings, it has only the appearance of a village; it, however, ranks as a borough, and returns two members to parliament; all the inhabitants who pay taxes have a right to vote.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

ALDBOROUGH is a township, parish and village, partly in the North Riding, 1 mile east from Boroughbridge station, 7 from Knaresborough, in the Eastern division of the Riding, lower division of Claro wapentake; Great Ouseburn union, Knaresborough county court district, archdeaconry of Richmond, rural deanery of Borougheridge and diocese of Ripon, situated on the south bank of the river Ure. The church of st. Andrew, an ancient building of stone, chiefly in the Decorated style and erected in 1360, consists of chancel, nave, aisles and square embattled tower, containing clock and 6 bell: the chancel was added at a later period and is in the Perpendicular style; the east and west windows are stained, and there are five other memorial windows in the chancel: there is a brass bearing the mailed figure of sir William De Aldeburgh, and a stone monument to another sir William De Aldeburgh, dated 1475: the church was restored in 1865, at a cost of about £1,000, raised entirely by subscription, in memory of the late vicar, the Rev. George K. Holdsworth M.A. The registers date from the year 1538, and are in good condition.Stolen from Forebears.co.uk The living is a vicarage, yearly value £420 with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of York and held by the Rev. Richard Walker Marriott M.A., of Lincoln College, Oxford. There are several charities and various amounts for distribution, to the extent of £100 yearly. Aldborough was formerly a Roman settlement, called Isurium, and many Roman antiquities have been dug up, including coins, signets and pieces of urns; some remains of aqueducts have been met with cut in great stones and covered with Roman tile, specimens of which may be seen in the borough museum, as well as relics from a temple built on what is called Borough Hill: several mosaic pavements, two of which are in good preservation, may be seen in the gardens of the Aldeburgh Arms inn: one of these represents a panther crouching under a palm tree, and the other a star, of eight points: there are also some remains of a Roman wall, from 5 to 7 feet thick, which formerly enclosed the town. Andrew s. Lawson esq. Is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil is loamy; the subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley and potatoes. The population of the township in 1871 was 502; area, 2,131 a. 3r. 24p.; rateable value, £6,015. The parish contains a population of 2,165, with 8,999 acres, including the townships of Boroughbridge, Roecliffe, Minskip, Ellenthorpe (North Riding), Higher and Lower Dunsforth. Branton Green and parts of Humberton and Milby.
