Ellenthorp History
ELLENTHORP is a township in the parish of Aldborough (West Riding), 1 ½ miles east from Borough-bridge station on the Knaresborough branch of the North Eastern railway, and 2 miles north-west from Myton-upon-Swale, in the Thirsk and Malton division of the North Riding, Hallikeld wapentake, petty sessional division of Wath, Thirsk union and Knaresboro’ county court district; it contains two good farms and a number cottages. In this township the Ure and Swale unite, and the confluent stream is called the Ouse. Of the tithes £3 goes to the vicar of Aldborough and £170 to the ean and Chapter of York and a lessee. The manor and principal part of the land belong to the Crown. The soil is strong loam; subsoil, sand and clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley and roots and some pasture land. The area is 599 acres of land and 12 of water; rateable value, £788; the population in 1911 was 54.
