Historical Description

ALLERSTON is a parish, township and village, on the nigh road between Pickering and Scarborough, with a station named Ebberston on the Scarborough and Pickering branch of the North Eastern railway, 11 miles north-east from Malton, 13 south-west from Scarborough and 5 east from Pickering; it is in the Whitby division of the Riding, Pickering Lythe wapentake, petty sessional division of Pickering Lythe East, Pickering union, Malton county court district, rural deanery of Malton, archdeaconry of Cleveland and diocese of York. The church of St. Mary is an ancient building of stone in the Norman style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and an embattled western tower with pinnacles, containing 2 bells: during a heavy storm on Friday, Oct. 14th, 1881, the roof of the nave was carried away; in 1882 the church was thoroughly restored and seated with open benches and a carved oak pulpit added at a cost of £900, raised by subscription: it also contains a memorial window to the Bravender family, 1878: the stained east window was erected by Miss Isabel Hind in memory of her uncles, William and John Hind: the church affords 160 sittings. The register dates from the year 1680. The living is a vicarage, united to the vicarage of Ebberston, joint net yearly value £300, including 48 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of York, and held since 1904 by the Rev. James Simpson Salman M.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge, who resides at Ebberston. Sir George Everard Arthur Cayley bart. of Woodbridge, who is lord of the manor, the trustees of the late Edward Lloyd esq. and the Ecclesiastical Commissioners are the principal landowners. The soil exhibits varieties of loam, limestone, sand, marsh and moorland; subsoil, the same. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The population in 1911 was 333, and the area is 10,049 acres of land and 9 of water; rateable value, £3,919.
