Historical Description

ALLERTHORPE is a parish and pleasant village, near the Old Hull and York road, 1 ½ miles south-west from Pocklington, which is the nearest railway station, 13 south-east from York and 27 from Hull; the parish includes the townships of Allerthorpe and Waplington, in the Howdenshire division of the Riding, Wilton Beacon division of the wapentake of Harthill, Wilton Beacon petty sessional division, Pocklington union and county court district, rural deanery of Pocklington, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. The church of St. Botolph, rebuilt in 1876 on the site of an older structure, at a cost of £1,100, by the late Admiral the Hon. A. Duncombe (d. 6 Feb. 1889), is an edifice of stone, consisting of chancel, nave, north porch and a western belfry containing 2 bells: there are 130 sittings. The register dates from the year 1620. The living is a chapelry annexed to Thornton, joint net yearly value £240, with residence, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1913 by the Rev. Thomas Walters B.A. of St., David’s College, Lampeter. The vicarial tithe rent-charge amounts to £90 5s. 6d. There is a Wesleyan chapel here. The charities amount to about £19 yearly, and are devoted towards the maintenance of the school and the relief of the poor of the parish. Allerthorpe Hall is the seat of Trevor Wheler Calverley-Rudston esq. D.L., J.P.; George A. Duncombe esq. of Highfield, Driffield, is lord of the manor and principal landowner, and holds in lease a tithe rent-charge of £155 5s. 6d. The soil is gravel and sand; the sub-soil, principally gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats, turnips, potatoes and seeds. The area of the township is 1,575 acres of land and 5 of water; rateable value, £1,613; the population in 1911 was 125.

Allerthorpe Common is about half a mile west, and comprises an area of nearly 500 acres.
