Historical Description
ALLERTON MAULEVERER is a township, parish, small village and station on the North-Eastern railway, 5 miles east from Knaresborough, 6 south from Boroughbridge and 6 north from Wetherby, in the Eastern division of the Riding, upper division of Claro wapentake, union of Great Ouseburn, Knaresborough county court district, rural deanery of Boroughbridge, archdeaconry of Richmond and diocese of Ripon; the parish includes the townships of Hopperton and Clareton. The Allerton station is 1 ¼ miles south and the Goldsborough station 2 miles west from Allerton church. The church of St. Martin is a cruciform building of stone, consisting of chancel, nave, aisle and transept, with a small square tower rising from the centre in which are 3 bells and a clock: the east end of the church is the property of Lord Mowbray and stourton, and has been used as the burial-place of that family; it contains a small quadrangular brass to sir John Mauleverer (1400) with arms oh jupon, and his wife Elianora, daughter of sir Peter de Midelton; this brass from its style, appears to be the work of some provincial artist. The register dates from the year 1707. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £90 in the gift of Lord Mowbray and Stourton and held by the Rev. William Valentine M.A. Of Worcester College, Oxford, vicar of and residing at Whixley. The Catholic chapel is a plain structure, dedicated to the Blessed Virgin and St. John of Beverley;, it has some stained glass, and is capable of holding; 300 people. Adjoining the churchyard is a cemetery for the use of the. Catholics, with a handsome stone cross in the centre.) in this parish was formerly a priory of Benedictines, founded by Richard Mauleverer in the reign of Henry II; but dissolved in the reign, of Henry VI. when its revenues were settled on Kings College. Stourton, formerly called Allerton Hall, the seat of Lord Mowbray and Stourton, is a handsome stone mansion, rebuilt in 1852; the west front is in the castellated style, with two large towers over the entrance; and within is a large square hall, lighted by a lantern tower: the building is surrounded by terrace walks, and stands in a deer park of about 450 acres, containing a lake, and enclosed by a wall 3 ½; miles in circumference; from the park extensive views are obtained, including Harrogate, York Minster and the Hambleton Hills; the grounds are approached through an extensive avenue, with an entrance lodge, which faces the York road and Allerton station. Lord Mowbray and Stourton is lord of the manor and sole landowner of the parish. The soil is loamy, and the subsoil sand and gravel, The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The population of the parish (1871) 306, and of the townships of Allerton and Hopperton 282, containing altogether 2,460 acres; rateable value, £3,376.
