Historical Description

Almondsbury in early times was a place of some consequence; it was a royal villa, and had a church dedicated to St. Alban (whence the name is supposed to have been derived), which was burnt in the wars between Edwin, prince of the Northumbers, and Penda King of Mercia.

On a high hill near Almondsbury, are some vestiges of an ancient castle and fortification, which Camden supposes to be the Roman Cambodunum, which we have above mentioned to have been, according to Mr. Watson, at Slack. He takes this castle hill to be Saxon. Nothing Roman has been found within a mile of it, and no Roman roads lead to it. The additions to Gibson’s Camden say there is no appearance of stone or brick at Almondsbury; but large masses of cinders or vitrified earth (one above two feet thick every way) have been found. In 1782, in digging for materials to mend the roads, foundations of ancient buildings of hewn stone were found.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

ALMONDBURY is a township and extensive parish and ward of the borough of Huddersfield, extending 2 miles east-south-east; by the recent construction of an approach called somerset road, it has been rendered much more accessible. There is a station at Fenay Bridge, 1 mile distant, on the Kirkburton branch railway of the London and North Western. The church of All saints is an ancient structure in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel with memorial chapels, belonging to the Earl of Dartmouth and H. F. Beaumont esq. of Bretton, nave, aisles and a square tower containing a clock and 5 bells, and has 1,000 sittings, all free; there are several ancient brasses to the families of Fenay and Netherton, 2 stained windows to members of the Kaye family, placed by Lord Dartmouth. and 1 to George Armitage esq.; the east window and several others are also stained: the church has been thoroughly restored at a cost of about £9,000, of which Sir J. W. Ramsden bart. M.P. contributed £2,300. The registers date from the year 1557, and are tolerably complete. The vicar, Canon Hulbert, is publishing the “Annals” of the parish. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £350 with residence, in the gift of Sir John William Ramsden bart. M.P. and held by the Rev. Charles Augustus Hulbert M.A. of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, hon. canon of Ripon and surrogate. The Wesleyans and United Methodist Free Church have each a chapel here, likewise the Primitive Methodists at Lowerhouses. The cemetery, situated on an eminence, comprises 4 acres, and was opened March, 1861. There are also reading rooms connected with the Conservative and Liberal Clubs. The woollen manufacture as well as that of mohair, sealskin and fancy vestings is carried on here. The poor have charities of about £300 a year from two donors, the one bequeathed in the year 1621 and the other in 1724; these are about to receive new schemes of management. There are some traces of an ancient castle situated on a hill, called Castle Hill, 900 feet above the level of the sea, from which a good view of Huddersfield and the neighbourhood is obtained. Fenay Hall, an ancient building, pleasantly situated in extensive grounds, is the seat of J. A. Brooke esq.; adjoining are fields formerly glebe land but sold by the Crown in the time of Edward VI. to the Fenay family, from whom the hall derives its name. Sir John William Ramsden bart. M.P. lord of the manor, the Earl of Dartmouth. Sir J. Perceval Radcliffe bart. and the trustees of the late B. N. R. Batty esq. are the chief landowners. The soil is clayey; subsoil stone. The chief crops are wheat and oats. The parish contains 30,584 acres of land or 45 square miles, but many district parishes and chapelries have been formed out of it. The entire population of the parish in 1871 was 46,299. The township contains 2,585 acres, and the population (1871) 11,669, this includes Newsome, Taylor Hill, Primrose Hill and Salford, which have been taken from this parish add added to the new parishes or districts of Lockwood, Newsome and Rashcliffe. The district attached to the parish church contains a population of 5,111; rateable value £27,240, including Almondbury, Newsome, Berry Brow, Taylor Hill, Primrose Hill, Salford and part of Fenay Bridge and Mold Green.
