The village stands in the vale of the small river Kyle, which, after passing Carnebrig, flows into the Ouse at Newton. The railway station has a coal and luggage depot, and there are two good inns, one on each side of the line, and two others in the village. The church of St. Mary, standing on a slight eminence, and partly covered with ivy, is a building of stone in the Norman style, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle and a western tower, the upper stage of which is of brick, with pinnacles, and contains a clock and 3 bells: the stained east window is a memorial to the Rev. A. T. Bellhouse, a former vicar; and there are others given by the late Mrs. Bretherton, of Alne, and the late Mr. John Bretherton, of Aldwark: on the south side is a richly carved Norman doorway ornamented with medallions and inscriptions, and considered to be unique: the font has an ornamented basin of Norman work: the pulpit is of black oak and bears the date 1626: the church was restored about 1854, and again in 1883—4, a cost of 700, when stone traceried windows were substituted for the old round-headed wooden frames, the chancellor was relaid and the gallery removed from the north aisle: there are 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1560. The living is a vicarage, with Aldwark annexed, joint net yearly value 320, including 170 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Mrs. Jane Stott, of Alne, and held since 1908 by the Rev. Frank Charles Stott M.A. of University College, Durham. There is a Wesleyan chapel, erected in 1848. There are charities of £47 yearly value. Sir George Orby Wombwell bart. is lord of the manor. The soil on the west side is light and sandy, and on the east strong clay. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley and beans. The population of the township in 1911 was 441, and of the ecclesiastical parish, 1,400; the area of the township in 2,268 acres; rateable value, £7,928.
