Historical Description

AMPLEFORTH is a parish, township and village, on the south-west acclivity of the Hambleton Hills, originally in three townships of Ampleforth St. Peter, Ampleforth Birdford and Ampleforth Oswaldkirk, but amalgamated March 25th, 1887; it is 1 ½miles north from Ampleforth station on the North Eastern railway, 12 east-south-east from Thirsk and 4 ½ south-west from Helmsley, in the Whitby division of the Riding, Ryedale wapentake and petty sessional division, Helmsley union and county court district, and in the rural deanery of Helmsley, archdeaconry of Cleveland and diocese of York. The church of St. Hilda is a plain building of stone in the Norman style, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle, south porch and an embattled western tower with pinnacles, containing 3 bells: a richly ornamented Norman doorway and the archway over the south entrance alone remain of the original edifice; built into the wall of the tower are the effigies of a knight in armour, with his hands uplifted in prayer, and a lady; the inscription, with the exception of the Christian name, is obliterated: the church was almost entirely rebuilt in 1863, at a cost of £1,300, and in 1894 the tower was restored, the bells recast and a new bell added, and in the same year a new organ was provided: the church affords 300 sittings. The registers date from about the year 1600, but are imperfect. The living is a discharged vicarage, net yearly value £265, including 222 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Archbishop of York, and held since 1892 by the Rev. Arthur George Austen, of St. Edmund Hall, Oxford. The Catholic church, erected in 1907, will seat 200 persons, and is dedicated to Our Lady and St. Benedict. There are also Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels. On the heights above the village is an ancient encampment, called “studfold Ring”; the outer embankment is of considerable extent, and in the middle of its extensive area is the camp, the agger of which is elevated 9 feet from the bottom of the fosse: the form of the camp is pentagonal, and the mound has a depression at each of the angles, by one of which is a levelled passage across the inner ditch. To the west of the camp, about a quarter of a mile down the vale, is a deep ditch, extending a great distance, and called “the Double Dykes.” in the neighbourhood are many barrows, in which rude urns have been found. A sum of between £17 and £18 is derived annually from charitable bequests, including the Tent of Hagg Field, which contains 4a. 3r. 20p. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners are lords of the manor, and John Gerald Sootheran esq. and the Abbot of Ampleforth College are the principal landowners. The soil is in parts clay on gravel; the subsoil, gravel and limestone. The chief crops are oats and barley. The area is 2,368 acres; rateable value, £3,377; the population in 1911 was 701.

The Benedictine Abbey of St. Lawrence, situated a short distance east of the village, & better known as “Ampleforth College,” was founded here in 1802; it was subsequently much enlarged, & in 1857 a church was erected; the aisles are separated from the nave by screens & divided into private chapels, each with its altar & reredos & decorated with sculpture: in 1888 several stained windows & new choir stalls of oak were erected & the sanctuary pavement relaid, & in 1904 a reliquary was presented by members of the Ampleforth Society: a new stained window has since been placed in the chancel, in honour of St. Columba, St. Cuthbert & St. Aidan: in 1861 an additional wing, known as the “New College,” was erected from the designs of the late Mr. Joseph Hansom, of London: in 1901—3 chemical & physical laboratories were provided: the college will hold about 150 students & there are at present (1913) 130 in residence: the situation is healthy & picturesque. New buildings, begun in 1896, from designs by Mr. Bernard Smith F.R.I.B.A of London, were completed in 1900: the library contains about 24,000 volumes: on the north side is a cloister with windows in the Decorated style. In 1908 an infirmary was built, with wards for 24 beds; a theatre to seat 500, with stage & dressing rooms was erected in 1910; attached is a cricket ground of 4 acres, & there is also a gymnasium, swimming bath & an outdoor shooting range. The monastery was raised to the dignity of an abbey in 1900 & the election of the first abbot took place in October of that year. Part of the grounds has been laid out as a nine-hole golf course, for the use of students & visitors to the college. The nearest station is at Gilling, on the Malton, Thirsk & Pickering branches of the North Eastern railway; Rt. Rev. Joseph Oswald Smith Ph.D. abbot; Very Rev. James Edmund Matthews M.A. Claustral prior & headmaster; Rev. Valentine Paul Nevill M.A. sub-prior; Rev. James Bede Turner, procurator; Rev. William Ambrose Byrne M.A. prefect of discipline.
