Historical Description
APPLETON-LE-STREET is a parish and village on the old road from Hovingham to Malton, 1 mile west from Amotherby station on the Thirsk and Malton branch of the North Eastern railway, and 3 ¾ west-north-west from Malton. The ecclesiastical parish consists of the townships of Amotherby, Broughton, Hildenley and Swinton, also the hamlet of Easthorpe, in the Thirsk and Malton division of the Riding, Ryedale wapentake, Malton union, petty sessional division and county court district, rural deanery of Helmsley, archdeaconry of Cleveland and diocese of York. The church of All saints is an ancient building of stone, in the Norman style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, north porch and a western tower containing 2 bells: the foundation and some part of the base of the tower are probably of Saxon date: the church was restored and reseated in 1855 by the late Rev. Charles Pierrepont Peach B.A. then vicar, to whose memory a stained window was erected in 1886 by the parishioners: the stained east window and a brass tablet in the chancel were erected in 1904 in memory of the late James and W. H. Fairbank esqrs. and Mrs. James Fairbank: the oak panelling in the chancel was presented in 1912 in memory of Mrs. Peach: the roof was restored in 1904: there are 150 sittings. The register dates from the year 1680. The living is a vicarage, with Amotherby annexed, joint net yearly value £386, including 267 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Rev. James Legard Peach M.A. and held since 1893 by the Rev. Henry Ward B.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge, who resides at Amotherby. The impropriate tithes amount to £215. There are charities of 3 10s. yearly value. Mr. James Arthur Fairbank, who is lord of the manor (which comprises the sub-manors of Amotherby, Broughton and Swinton), and Mr. N. F. Fairbank, Miss S. E. Fairbank and Mrs. M. Wilson are the principal landowners. The soil is partly clay and sandy; the subsoil is limestone and clay sand. The chief crops are wheat, barley and some land in pasture. The population of the civil parish, inclusive of the hamlet of Easthorpe, in 1911 was 150, and the ecclesiastical parish 991; the acreage of the civil parish, inclusive of the hamlet of Easthorpe, is 1,633 acres; rateable value, £1,762.
