Historical Description

ARDSLEY is a township, village, and ecclesiastical parish (formed in 1844 from the parish of Darfield) and station on the south Yorkshire railway, 2 miles east from Barnsley, 13 west from Doncaster, 13 east-north-east from Sheffield, in the southern division of the Riding, lower division of Staincross wapentake, Barnsley union and county court district, rural deanery of Wath. York archdeaconry and diocese, situated on the Barnsley and Doncaster turnpike road, and on the river Dearne and the Dearne and Dove canal. Christ Church, built in 1841, is a stone building in the Norman style, and consists of chancel, nave and aisles, with a small belfry containing 1 bell. The register dates from the year 1841. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £120 with residence, in the gift of the vicar of Darfield and held by the Rev. John Holton Lloyd Kane M.A. Of Trinity College, Dublin. There is a Wesleyan chapel and Sunday school, and a chapel for the Methodist New Connexion at Hoyle Mill. The Oaks collieries and stone quarries, situated in this township, were the scene of a fearful catastrophe by an explosion of fire-damp in the mines on the 12th December, 1866, when 361 persons lost their lives. Ardsley House is the seat of Richard Micklethwait esq. J.P. lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil is rich clay; the subsoil is gritstone and coal, The chief crops are wheat, barley, turnips and potatoes. The population in 1861 was 1,772, and (1871), 2,143, and the area of the township is 1,212 acres; the area of the ecclesiastical parish is 1,259 acres; rateable value £13,191 14s. 3d.
