Historical Description

EAST ARDSLEY is a parish and village and station, 3 ½ miles north-west from Wakefield, 4 ½ by railway, 6 south from Leeds, 10 south-east from Bradford, in the southern division of the Riding, honor of Pontefract, lower division of Agbrigg wapentake, Wakefield union, county court district and rural deanery, archdeaconry of Craven, diocese of Ripon and province of York, situated on the road from Wakefield to Bradford. The Great Northern and the Lancashire and Yorkshire railway trains run on the same line into the joint station here. The church of St. Michael has been recently demolished to make way for a new church, now in course of erection. The register of burials begins March, 1654; of marriages October, 1654, and of baptisms March, 1662, but is very defective. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £369 with residence, of which £270 is derived from houses and land left in 1860 by Timothy Labourne; in the gift of the Countess of Cardigan and held by the Rev. John Henry Dent Hill. There are chapels for Wesleyans and for the Methodist Free Church. The charities are of£14 yearly value. Gas works were established here in 1873. The parish abounds in coal. Here is a woollen manufactory, carried on by Messrs. Simpson Brothers, iron smelting works belonging to the West Yorkshire Iron and Coal Co. Of Leeds, and Robert Holliday and sons have extensive collieries here. Charles Thompson Dealtry is lord of the manor, and the principal landowners are the Countess of Cardigan and William Wood esq. The soil is clay and loam; the subsoil is clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley, turnips, oats and pasture. The area is 1,818 acres; rateable value £16,933 6s.; and the population in 1861 was 1,069, and (1871) 1,596.
