Historical Description

WEST ARDSLEY (or Woodkirk) situated on the roads from Leeds to Dewsbury and from Wakefield to Bradford, is a township, parish and village, 5 miles north-west from Wakefield, 3 north from Dewsbury, 5 south from Leeds and 9 south-east from Bradford, in the southern division of the Riding, lower division of Agbrigg wapentake, Wakefield union and county court district, rural deanery and archdeaconry of Craven, and diocese of Ripon: the nearest station is at Tingley, 1 mile distant, on the Wakefield and Bradford branch of the Great Northern railway. The church of St. Mary is a stone building, rebuilt about the year 1831, and consists of chancel and nave, with a tower of considerably earlier date, which contains 3 bells, 2 of which date from 1713, and a clock: there is a monument to sir John Top-cliffe, dated 1514. The register dates from the year 1653, and is in fair condition. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £320 with good residence, in the gift of the Countess of Cardigan and held by the Rev. John Freeman M.A. Of Emmanuel College, Cambridge. Sunday schools are held at Woodkirk and Lee Fair. There are chapels for Wesleyans at Lee Fair and Tingley, and a chapel for Wesleyan Reformers at Haigh Moor. The charities amount to about £10 yearly value. A fair is held in August and September yearly for horses. There are coal and iron mines; the West Yorkshire Coal and Iron Company employ about 800 men and boys; and there is a brick and tile manufactory. Tingley Hall, the seat of Henry Longbottom esq. is pleasantly situated in its own grounds of about 70 acres, on the Leeds and Bradford roads. The Countess of Cardigan is lady of the manor and chief landowner: Henry Longbottom esq. is also a considerable landowner. The soil is clay and sand; subsoil clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and pasture. The area is 2,327 acres; rateable value £12.505 7s.; and the population in 1861 was 1,643 and (1871) 2,559.
