Historical Description

ARKENGARTHDALE is a township and parish, in the dale of the same name, on the Richmond, Reeth and Brough road, 9 miles north-west from Redmire railway station on the Northallerton and Hawes branch of the North Eastern railway, about 10 south from Barnard Castle, 14 west from Richmond, and 4 north-west from Reeth, in the Richmond division of the Riding, West Gilling wapentake and petty sessional division, Reeth union, county court district of Richmond, rural deanery of West Richmond, archdeaconry of Richmond and diocese of Ripon. The Arkle Beck flows through the parish, which extends 7 or 8 miles in length. The church of St. Mary, erected in 1818, in the centre of the dale, about a quarter of a mile from Langthwaite, which is the largest village in the dale, is a plain building of stone, consisting of a rectangular nave with a quasi chancel and an embattled western tower containing 3 bells and a clock with two dials; there are monuments to George Brown esq. and to the Rev. John Gilpin, and Jemima, his wife. The church affords 344 sittings. The register dates from the year 1729, and has a few entries from an earlier book no longer in existence; the oldest of these entries is dated 1659. The living is a perpetual curacy, net yearly value £160, with residence, in the gift of John George Lowther esq. and held since 1911 by the Rev. Ernest Montague Thompson M.A. of Durham University. Lead is obtained here. There are saw mills in connection with the mines; coal and slate are also found. George Thomas Gilpin-Brown esq. D.L., J.P. of scar House, who is lord of the manor, and the Peacock family are the principal landowners. The soil is loamy, chiefly moorland and grass. The area is 14,556 acres of land and 21 of water; rateable value, £3,900; the population in 1911 was 363.
