ARKSEY (or Bentley-with-Arksey) is a station on the Great Northern railway and extensive parish, including the villages of Bentley and Arksey and the hamlets of Almholme, Bodles, Doncaster Bridge End, Scawthorpe Shaftholme and Stockbridge, in the southern division of the Riding, lower division of Strafforth and Tickhill wapentake, Doncaster union and county court district, rural deanery of Doncaster and archdeaconry and diocese of York: the village is 3 miles north-east from Doncaster, 158 ¼ from London and about 35 from York, on the navigable river Don and Great North road. The church of All saints dates from about the year 1150, and comprises various styles of architecture, from the Transitional Norman to Late Perpendicular: it consists of chancel, nave, aisles, transept and a tower with a small spire rising from the centre, and has a peal of 5 bells, circ. 1622, clock, a beautiful font, dated 1662, and monuments to the family of sir W. Cooke bart. of Wheatley: this church was restored during the years 1869 and 1870, under the direction of sir G. G. Scott R.A. at a cost of about £3,000, which was raised by voluntary contributions. The register dates from the year 1559, and is in good condition. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £120, with a very good residence and 4 acres of glebe, in the gift of sir William R. C. Cooke bart. and held by the Rev. Walter Augustus Gray M.A. Of Trinity College, Cambridge.
