The church of All saints dates from about the year 1150, and comprises various styles of architecture, from the Transitional Norman to Late Perpendicular: it consists of chancel, nave, aisles, transept and a tower with a small spire rising from the centre, and has a peal of 5 bells, circ. 1622, clock, a beautiful font, dated 1662, and monuments to the family of sir W. Cooke bart. of Wheatley: this church was restored during the years 1869 and 1870, under the direction of sir G. G. Scott R.A. at a cost of about £3,000, which was raised by voluntary contributions. The register dates from the year 1559, and is in good condition. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £120, with a very good residence and 4 acres of glebe, in the gift of sir William R. C. Cooke bart. and held by the Rev. Walter Augustus Gray M.A. Of Trinity College, Cambridge. The Hospital, founded by the Cooke family, is endowed with £60, and there is also £37 yearly for 12 poor women who are nominated by sir W. R. C. Cooke bart. The Sunday school, attended by about 90 children, is held at the Free school. At Bentley there is a mission chapel in connexion with the church, also chapels for the Wesleyans and Primitive Methodists. The charities for distribution are of about £16 yearly value. Three local quarries supply the neighbourhood with stone for building and repairing the roads. There are several moats and elevated mounds in the neighbourhood, probably the remains of Roman military works; of these the most notable are the Roundabout, near Arksey; Moat Hill, near Bentley, and Cattle Hills and Radcliffe Moat, at the northern extremity of the parish. Sir William R. C. Cooke bart. Robert Wakeman Hewitt esq. Richard Helier Wrightson esq. William Chadwick esq. George Robson esq. Of Pontefract, Edward Jackson esq. Thomas Walkes esq. and William Hollins esq. are large landowners. The soil is loamy in one part, and sand, clay and limestone in others; the subsoil is gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and turnips. The area is 5,133 acres, of which, 63 are water; rateable value, £19,856; population in 1871, 1,197.

The Board, school is a building of red brick with stone dressings, erected in 1877 at a cost of £2,000, & is available for 150 children: the school is situated in the centre of the village & has a house for the master & mistress; Charles Parkinson, master; Miss Sarah Ann Parkinson, infants mistress.
