Historical Description

ARMLEY, situated on the river Aire and Leeds and Liverpool canal, is a large and ancient village, township, and ecclesiastical parish formed from the parish of Leeds, with stations on the Leeds, Bradford and Halifax Junction and Great Northern railways, 2 miles west from Leeds, 9 east from Bradford, a polling place for the Eastern division of the Riding, within the parliamentary and municipal borough, petty sessional division of Leeds, wapentake of Morley and honor of Pontefract, Bramley union, Leeds county court district, rural deanery of Leeds, archdeaconry of Craven and diocese of Ripon. The village is lighted with gas, and supplied with water from the Leeds Borough Water Works. The old church of St. Bartholomew is a plain stone building, with few architectural pretensions, and consists of nave, aisles, and turret containing 1 bell, and has some handsome monuments of the Gott family. The stately new church of St. Bartholomew, which, although far from complete, has already cost £20,000, is a building in the Early English style, and consists of apsidal chancel, nave, with clerestory and transepts, all of equal height; north and south porches are in course of erection, opposite the last bay on either side, and the vestry is placed at the junction of the apse with the south transept: the church is also intended to be surmounted by a central tower; the font is placed midway between the porches and elevated on an octagonal base of three steps: the reredos is of alabaster and Caen stone, and is composed of one horizontal panel containing sculptured work, with arcading above, the compartments of which are filled in with painted tiles. The chief internal dimensions of the church are as follows:-total length. 157 ft.; length of nave, 98 ft. 6 in; width across transepts, 65 ft.; width of nave and aisles, 54 ft.; width of nave, 30 ft.; width of transepts, 27 ft.; width of tower, 36 ft,; heights from nave floor to wall plate, 46 ft.; to vaulting of tower, 59 fr. 6 in; to ridge of roof, 73 ft. The register dates from the year 1673, and is in good condition. The living is a perpetual curacy, yearly value £300, with residence, in the gift of the vicar of Leeds, and held by the Rev. Frederick George Hume smith M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. There is a cemetery here, of which the Rev. Stephen Lampen M.A. is chaplain, and David Hartley Higgins clerk and sexton. There are chapels for Baptists, Wesleyans, Primitives and Methodist New Connexion. Near the church are almshouses for twelve poor women, founded by the late Benjamin Gott esq. in 1832. The woollen cloth manufacture is largely carried on here.
