Upper Armley History

Upper Armley is an ecclesiastical parish formed in 1867. Christ Church, erected in 1872, is a handsome stone structure in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles and square tower with a peal of 6 bells of the same date as the church. The register dates from the year 1869. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £150, in the gift of William Henry Gott esq. and held by the Rev. John Thompson, of St. Aidans. Armley House, the seat of William Henry Gott esq. who is lord of the manor and chief landowner, is a mansion of stone, surrounded by park and pleasure grounds 70 acres in extent. Wytber, the seat of Thomas Harrison esq. is a plain stone building. The soil is chiefly clay; subsoil clay. The land is chiefly in pasturage. The acreage is 961; rateable value £34,938; the population in 1861 was 6,734 and (1871) 9,224.
