The church of St. Mary is an ancient building of stone in the Norman style, consisting of chancel and nave, with a bell turret containing 1 bell at the west end: it was thoroughly restored in 1879—80 at a cost of £1,200, when many interesting architectural features, previously hidden, were brought to light, among which may be especially mentioned the verification of the doorway leading to the vestry as a work of Saxon origin: the church is now fitted with open benches of polished pine, seating 150 persons, and in the chancel with choir stalls of oak; the entire roofing having been also renewed in open timber-work: the communion table, together with a handsome cover, reredos, pulpit, lectern and font, have all been presented by the generosity of various friends: the west window has been filled with stained glass in memory of Blanche Maria, wife of Robert Swann, who died January 11th. 1878; other memorials of this family are those of John Tomlinson Swann, Commander R.N. of H.M.S. “Rattler,” who died at Yokohama in 1868, and of John Swann and Georgiana his wife (1872) and Robert Swann and Ursula his wife (1848): there are also tablets to William Carr esq. and his wife (1818), one on the south wall to Elizabeth Berry, and a third on the north wall to the Rev. James Willoughby, 64 years vicar of this parish, who died February 10th. 1816, aged 85: beneath the communion table is a singular slab bearing a cross and the name of Thomas Milner; the west wall bears a monument with arms and crest to the memory of the Rev. Richard Sowray, rector of Catton, vicar of Askham and parson of Bilborough (1755). The register dates from the year 1579, and is in excellent condition.
