Historical Description
Askrigg, though a market-town, resembles a village, scarcely containing 800 inhabitants. The market is on Thursday. It is situated in the centre of Wensley Dale, near the northern bank of the Ure.
About half a mile from Askrigg is a water-fall, called Millgill Force, which makes one grand vertical fall of about twenty or thirty yards, and then rushes down the rocky bed of the ravine. One mile further is Whitfield’s Force, a spectacle highly gratifying to the lover of picturesque scenery; and about five miles up the dale from the town is Hardrow Force, a cascade, where the water falls, in one vast sheet, from a ledge of rocks ninety-nine feet in perpendicular height. The ravine or chasm, which extends below the fall, is bounded on each side by huge masses of rock, and is about three hundred yards in length. Behind the fall is a deep recess, whence a good view of it may be obtained with safety. During the hard frost in the year 1740-41, a prodigious icicle is recorded to have been found here, of the whole height of the fall, and nearly equal in circumference.
ASKRIGG is a small town, township and parish, in the centre of Wensleydale, on the north side of the river Ure, or Yore, with a station on the Northallerton and Hawes branch of the North Eastern railway, 12 miles west of Leyburn, 18 south-west of Richmond and 5 ½ north-east-by-east of Hawes: it is in the Richmond division of the Riding, wapentake and petty sessional division of Hang West, union of Aysgarth, highway district of Askrigg, county court district of Leyburn, rural deanery of West Catterick, archdeaconry of Eichmond and diocese of Ripon. The ecclesiastical parish includes the township of Low Abbotside and part of the township of Bainbridge, as well as that of Askrigg itself. The town is lighted by electricity by a private company, whose power is obtained from Millgill Force. The church of St. Oswald, erected about 1466, is a building of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower with pinnacles containing a clock and 6 bells: in the south aisle is a chantry dedicated to St. Anne, and formerly the property of the Metcalfe family, of Nappa, several of whom are buried here: the chantry is now used as an organ chamber and contains an organ erected to the memory of the Rev. Canon C. Whaley M.A. vicar 1869—1905: the stained east window was erected by subscription in 1878 in memory of George Winn, jun. drowned in crossing Aysgarth Ford in April, 1876: there are 520 sittings. The register dates from the year 1701. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £198, including 13 acres of glebe, in the gift of the vicar of Aysgarth, and held since 1906 by the Rev. Frederick Morris Symonds Squibb M.A. of Pembroke College, Oxford, perpetual curate of stalling-Busk and chaplain of Aysgarth union. Additional ground was added to the churchyard in 1910. The tithe, amounting to £84, belongs to Trinity College, Cambridge. There are Wesleyan Methodist and Primitive Methodist chapels here. A market was formerly held here on Thursday. Fairs are held on the 1st Thursday in June for merchandise and pleasure; 1st and 2nd July for sheep and cattle; the 2nd Thursday in July for hiring servants for the hay harvest; and 28th October for cattle. About a mile west from the town formerly stood the Cistercian abbey of Fors, or De Caritate, founded by Acharius FitzBardolph in 1147, and translated in 1156 to Jervaulx, by Conan, Duke of Bretagne and Earl of Richmond. There are three almshouses for as many poor widows or single women, with an allowance of £16 a year, erected in 1807 in accordance with the will of Christopher Alderson, a native of this parish, and late of Homerton, London; there is also one out-pensioner connected with this charity. Millgill Force, about a quarter of a mile west of the church, has a fall of 90 feet; and half a mile above this, on the same stream, is Whitfieldgill Force, with a fall of 80 feet. A great part of the township consists of high moorland, with capital grouse shooting. The principal landowners are R. C. de Grey Vyner esq. of Newby Hall, Ripon, Geoffrey B. T. Metcalfe esq. of Claydon House, Lechlade, Glos., Lieut.-Col. Darwin Durham, Harold Lowther esq. and James Clarkson Winn esq. J. P. Harry Tunstill esq. Reedy Ford, Nelson, is lessee, under the Crown, of the manor of Askrigg. The area of the township, which includes the hamlets of Newbiggin, Nappa and Woodhall, is 4,891 acres of land and 31 of water; rateable value, £4,607; the population in 1911 was 470. The ecclesiastical parish had a population in 1911 of 943.
Public Elementary school (mixed), erected in 1877, for 120 children; average attendance, 86.
