Historical Description

Attercliffe, now united to the town of Sheffield, is miles north-east from Sheffield market-place, situate between the river Don and the Tinsley canal, about 1 mile north of the Darnall station of the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire railway, with a station on the south Yorkshire branch of the same railway; Attercliffe was formed into a separate ecclesiastical parish in 1849. The old chapel of ease, now used as a mortuary chapel only, is at the eastern end and was built in 1629. Christ Church is a building in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave and a square toner, situated on a cliff near the river Don, and was erected in 1823 at a cost of £14,000, derived from a Parliamentary grant; it was repewed and the galleries removed in 1867, and has upwards of 1,000 seats, all free and unappropriated. The register dates from the year 1719. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £300 with residence, in the gift of the vicar of Sheffield and held by the Rev. George Depledge M.A. University College, Oxford. The cemetery, opened in 1859, contains upwards of four acres of ground, tastefully laid out, and including the chapel on the unconsecrated ground, cost £2,300. The Town school, built in 1779, is partly endowed; there is a National school in Lord street and a Board school on Attercliffe common. The Catholics, Congregationalists, Wesleyans, Methodist New Connexion, Methodist Free Church and Wesleyan Reformers have each a place of worship. The Sheffield Tramways Company, whose lines extend through Attercliffe to Tinsley, convey passengers to and from Lady’s Bridge at short intervals throughout the day.

Attercliffe-cum-Darnall is a large township in the civil parish and municipal and parliamentary borough of Sheffield, Sheffield union and county court district, and includes the villages of Attercliffe, Carbrook and Darnall. Here are large steel, iron, file and cutlery works, as well as extensive chemical works and collieries, in which the bulk of the inhabitants are employed. The Duke of Norfolk is lord of the manor, Earl Fitzwilliam being a large landowner. The soil is sandy loam; subsoil, yellow clay and rock. The township contains 1,297 acres; rateable value, £69,608; and had in 1871 a population of 15,574, which at present time is estimated to have increased to 22,000.
