Historical Description

ATWICK is a parish, township and village, 2 ½ miles north from Hornsea terminal station of that branch of the North Eastern railway, and 14 east-by-north from Beverley, in the Holderness division of the Riding, north division of Holderness wapentake. North Holderness petty sessional division, Skirlaugh union, county court district of Beverley, rural deanery of Hornsea, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. The church of St. Lawrence, rebuilt in 1876 at a cost of £1,725, is an edifice of red brick in the Early English style, and consists of chancel, nave, south porch and a saddle-back tower at the north-east, containing one bell: it was reopened in January, 1877: there are 175 sittings. The register dates from the year 1538. The living is a discharged vicarage, net yearly value £115, including 25 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1904 by the Rev. Arthur William Benjamin Walmsley Watts B.A. of Selwyn College, Cambridge, who is also vicar of Nun-keeling-with-Bewholme, and resides at Bewholme. There is a Wesleyan chapel, built in 1821, and seating 80 persons; and a Primitive Methodist chapel, built in 1856, with 60 sittings. In the village is an ancient cross, said, in 1795, to have been 43 chains from the sea; in 1853 it was 39 chains, and in 1871 38 chains from the sea, but by the wasting of the cliffs since that period it is now only about 36 chains distant. The Fenwick and Burton charities are now combined, and managed by nine trustees, viz.: the vicar and the chairman of the school committee for the time being as ex-officio trustees, and Messrs. Peter Leonard, George Mason Gale, Edward Allan Dent, Hugh William Smith, George Bolton, John Coates and Matthew Coates as non-official trustees; two-thirds of the net proceeds of the charities are devoted to the education of children born in the parish, or whose parents are bona-fide residents in the parish of Atwick; the remaining one-third is applied for the benefit of deserving or necessitous persons residing in the parish of Atwick: the income of these charities is £50 a year; the school fees and prizes are now provided out of the above, any surplus being paid into the Savings Bank for the benefit of the children, to whom payments are made on their coming of age. The principal landowners are Thomas Reed esq. of Arram Hall, and G. M. Gale esq. The soil is a deep strong clay; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley, beans and oats. The area is 2,244 acres of land and 83 of foreshore; rateable value, £2,220; the population in 1911 was 291.

A School Committee of 6 managers was formed April 1st, 1904.

Public Elementary School (mixed), erected in 1877 and enlarged in 1910, for 70 children; average attendance, 60.
