Historical Description

AUSTERFIELD, a village and township, situated near the Roman road from Littleborough to Doncaster, on the borders of Notts, and once forming part of the parish of Blyth in that county, now constitutes with Bawtry the ecclesiastical parish of Bawtry-with-Austerfield, 1 ¼ miles north-north-east from Bawtry railway station, and 8 ½ southeast from Doncaster, in the southern division of the Riding, Doncaster union and county court district, north division of the wapentake of Strafforth and Tickhill, rural deanery of Retford, archdeaconry of Nottingham and diocese of Lincoln. The church of St. Helen is an ancient edifice in the Norman style, and consists of one building divided into nave and chancel by a circular-headed arch, and has two small bells: it was re-pewed and a gallery added in 1834. The register dates from the year 1559 and is in good condition. The living is a vicarage with Bawtry annexed, yearly value £500, in the patronage of Trinity College, Cambridge, and held by the Rev. Augustus Dobree Carey M.A. of that college: the rectorial tithes belong to Trinity College, Cambridge. The Primitive Methodists have a chapel here. Austerfield is in Domesday Book called ‘ Oustrefield, ’ and derives its name probably from some old form of the cardinal point of the compass east, though it is thought by some to be derived from the Roman general Ostorius, who was defeated here by the Britons. Finningley Park, 2 miles north, the seat of George Spofforth Lister esq. J.P. is a substantial stone building surrounded by a well-wooded park of about 50 acres. Lord Houghton, who is lord of the manor, the trustees of the late William Newman esq. Miss Dackle and William Cadman esq. are chief landowners. The soil is sand, clay and peat; the subsoil is sand and gravel. The chief crops are turnips, barley wheat and oats. The area is 2,781 acres; rateable value £3,493; the population in 1871 was 413.
