Historical Description

BADSWORTH is a parish, township and pretty village, 5 miles south from Pontefract, 11 north-east from Doncaster, 9 south-east from Wakefield, in the Eastern division of the Riding, upper division of the wapentake of Osgoldcross, Pontefract county court district, Hemsworth union, rural deanery of Pontefract, and archdeaconry and diocese of York. Hemsworth station, on the Great Northern loop line, is 2 miles, and Ackworth station on the Midland and North Eastern railway, 3 miles distant. The church of St. Mary is an old stone building in the Perpendicular style of the fifteenth or beginning of the sixteenth century, some few portions remaining of the original Norman structure, and consists of chancel, nave, aisles, tower with clock and 4 bells dating from 1580, and on the north of the chancel a small chapel, maintained by the lords of the manor of Rogerthorpe; there are several stained windows, two of them being memorials to the Rev. H. W. J. Champneys, formerly rector, and Lucy Champneys, his wife, and one to the Rev. W. J. Newman, late rector; there is also an elaborate monument to sir John Bright, formerly of Badsworth Hall, who died A.D. 1688, a brass, John Pyment (1772), and a tablet in memory of the Rev. William Entwistle (1732), who re-built the rectory at his own expense; the church was repaired throughout in the years 1846 and 1847. The register dates from the year 1564, and is in good condition. The living is a rectory, with residence, yearly value £596, including 168 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Earl of Derby, and held by the Rev. Frank Edward Hopwood M.A. of Christ Church, Oxford. Here is a Sunday school, and chapel for Wesleyan Methodists. Badsworth Hall, an ancient stone building, surrounded by well laid-out pleasure grounds, situated in a fine wooded domain, is the seat of Richard Heywood Jones esq. J.P. who is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil is generally strong; the subsoil is clay serried loam. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and beans. The population of the township (1871) 190, of the parish 595; and the area of the parish is 3,970 acres, and of the township 1,750 acres; rateable value, £2,672.
