Historical Description

BAILDON is a township and ecclesiastical parish, formed in 1869 from the parish of Otley, 1 mile north-east from Shipley, 5 north-east from Bradford, 5 south-west from Otley by road, and by rail, having a station on the Midland line of railway; it is in the Eastern division of the Biding, upper division of the wapentake of Skyrack, honor of Pontefract, Otley county court district, union of Wharfedale, rural deanery of Otley, archdeaconry of Craven and Ripon diocese. The river Aire separates it from Shipley. There is a local board of health established in 1852, consisting of 9 members. The church of St. John is a plain stone building, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles and turret with 2 bells, cast in 1832, and contains an organ; it was rebuilt in 1848 by subscription, at a cost of about £1,200: there are some ancient monuments to the Butler family, and several stained windows. The register dates from the year 1662. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £300, with residence, in the gift of trustees and held by the Rev. Denis Carey B.A. of Downing College, Cambridge. An iron church was erected near Tonge Park in 1869, by public subscription, and is capable of seating about 200 persons. There are also wooden churches at Baildon green and Wood bottom, capable of accommodating 180 and 170 persons respectively, the former having been erected in 1872, and the latter in 1874. The Airedale cemetery, consisting of about 4 acres, was opened in 1863, and has a mortuary chapel. There are chapels for Moravians, Wesleyans, Primitive Methodists, and Baptists. Several benefit societies are established here, a mechanics’ institute, and a Liberal club. Topham's charity was left for the purpose of apprenticeship, and £100 was thus expended in 1876. Baildon is supplied with excellent water, obtained from three reservoirs, situated on the moor, and self supplying; the works were established by the Local Board in 1852. There are coal mines, stone quarries, chemical works, and the manufacture of worsted is extensively carried on. Captain W. W. Maude is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil varies very much; oats and roots are the chief crops; some of the land is in pasture. The area is 2,606 acres; rateable value, £15,838; and the population in 1871 was 4,784.
