Historical Description

BAINTON is a parish, township and village, with a station on the Driffield and Market Weighton section of the North Eastern railway, and is 6 miles south-west from Driffield and 10 north-west from Beverley, in the Buck-rose division of the Riding, Bainton Beacon petty sessional division, wapentake of Harthill, Driffield union and county court district, rural deanery of Harthill, archdeaconry of East Riding and diocese of York. The church of St. Andrew is an ancient building of stone, mainly in the Late Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, north and south porches and embattled western tower with pinnacles, containing a clock and 2 bells: the upper portion of the tower was pulled down and rebuilt in 1869: there is an altar tomb, with effigy, to Edmund de Mauley, ancestor of the Barons Mauley, a title in abeyance from 1415, but revived 1838 in favour of the Ponsonby family, descendants through the female line: in the chancel is a brass with effigy, bearing chalice, and a Latin inscription in rhyming hexameters to Roger Godeale, rector of this church (ob. 1429): the font is Norman, and in the south aisle is a piscina: the chancel retains an aumbry, piscina and restored sedilia: there are 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1561. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £555, arising from 612 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of St. John's College, Oxford, and held since 1903 by the Rev. Francis Henry Woods B.D. late fellow of St. John's College, Oxford. There are Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels. Mrs. Wrangham, of Neswick Hall, who is lady of the manor, and the rector are the principal landowners. The soil is various; subsoil, principally chalk. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley and turnips. The area of the township is 2,982 acres; rateable value, £3,434; the population in 1911 was 337 in the township and 397 in the parish.
