Historical Description

BARDSEY is a village and parish comprising the townships of Bardsey-with-Rigton, Wothersome and part of Wike, 4 miles south-west from Wetherby, 14 from York and 8 north-east from Leeds, in the Eastern division of the Riding, lower division of Skyrack wapentake, Wetherby union, Tadcaster county court district, rural deanery of Wetherby, Craven archdeaconry, diocese of Ripon. Here is a station on the North-Eastern railway. The church of Allhallows, restored some time since, is a venerable structure of Saxon and Norman work, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, four chapels, and tower containing 3 bells, dated respectively 1674, 1723 and 1719: the south-east chapel was erected by Lord Bingley in 1728 and bears his name; it is now used as a vestry; the remaining chapels date from the Norman period; that on the north-east serving as an organ chamber, the others are respectively appropriated to the vicar and to free sittings; on the south side of the chancel are the monuments of the widow of Francis Thorpe, baron of the Exchequer (1669) and of the Rev. M. Willis Andrew, vicar of Bardsey (1731); on the north side are the monuments of Charles Lister (1684), with a Latin inscription and of the Rev. Richard Capstick, curate of Bardsey (1785): the churchyard also contains some memorials of interest, including the tombs of John Thackwray, of Rowley (1757) and of Samuel Abbott (1802); there also is a sundial of excellent workmanship made by a former schoolmaster in 1751: Congreve, the poet and dramatist, horn at Bardsey, was baptised in this church in 1670. The register dates from the year 1538, and is in good condition; a copy, to some extent in fac-simile, has been made by the present parish clerk, Mr, Frederick William Sheppard. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £300 with a handsome residence (erected in 1849—50) and 130 acres of glebe, in the gift of George Lane Fox esq. and held by the Rev. Edward Beardoe Braithwaite M.A. of Caius College, Cambridge. The charities are of £4 yearly value. Near the village, to the north are traces of an ancient castle, and to the south-east, of encampments, probably Danish or Saxon. George Lane Fox esq. is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is stiff clay; subsoil sand and limestone. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats, grass and turnips. The population of the township in 1871 was 287; the area is 2,748 acres; rateable value, £3,523; the population of the parish is 363 and the area 4,105 acres.

There is a day school for boys & girls, endowed with land of the value of £23 a year, by the bequest of Robert Lord Bingley in 1726; the schoolroom also serves for the Sunday school; Frederick William Sheppard, master.
