Historical Description

BARLBY is a village, township and chapelry, in the parish of Hemingborough, on the river Ouse, 1 ½ miles north-north-east from Selby station on the North Eastern railway, in the Howdenshire division of the Riding, Ouse and Derwent wapentake and petty sessional division, Selby union and county court district, rural deanery of Escrick. archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. The chapel is a plain edifice of brick, erected in 1779-80 on the site of a former chapel, and consists of nave and a western turret containing one bell; it was thoroughly restored and a new chancel added in 1895, at a cost of £1,000, and affords 160 sittings. The register dates from the year 1780. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £85, including 75 acres of glebe, in the gift of the vicar of Hemingborough, and held since 1912 by the Rev. William Brunt Crankshaw B.A. of Durham University. There is a Wesleyan chapel here. Riley Briggs esq. of Osgodby Hall, is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are the trustees of the late Rev. James McGibbon Burn-Murdoch M.A. vicar of Riverhead, Kent (d. 1904) and the trustees of Mrs. Parker. The soil consists of warp land, as well as sandy soil; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley and potatoes.

The area is 1,304 acres of land, 48 of tidal water and g of foreshore; rateable value, £17,819; the population in 1911 was 792 in the township, including Barlby Bank, opposite Selby, and 801 in the ecclesiastical parish.

Public Elementary School for Barlby & Osgodby, erected in 1913, for 300 children.
