Historical Description

BARMBY-ON-THE-MARSH (anciently called Barmby-on-the-Derwent) is a village and township in the ancient civil parish of Howden, wapentake and petty sessional division of Howdenshire, union and county court district of Howden and in the Howdenshire division of the Riding; it was constituted a separate ecclesiastical parish July 9th, 1864, from the ancient parish of Howden, and is in the rural deanery of Howden, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York, with a station (opened in 1896) on the Hull and Barnsley railway, two and a half miles south from Wressell station on the Hull and Selby branch of the North Eastern railway, 4 south-west from Howden and 18 south-east from York. The rivers Derwent and Ouse unite here, and there is a ferry crossing the Ouse at Langrick ferry to Drax and Selby. The church of St. Helen is a plain but ancient building of stone, consisting of chancel, nave, north and south porches and a western tower of brick, with cupola containing 2 bells: the chancel was restored in 1870, and retains a piscina: the nave was re-seated in 1871 and new-roofed in 1891: the stained east window is a memorial to Elizabeth Pycock, and there is another, inserted in 1880, to Mrs. Robinson, wife of the late incumbent: there are 133 sittings. The register dates from the year 1790; the previous registers from 1590 are included in the Howden registers. The living is a vicarage, with Lectureship and Readership attached, net yearly value £282, with residence, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1899 by the Rev. John William Talbot, of St. Bees. There are Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels. The old National school, built in 1834, is now used as a Church Parish room and for other purposes. Blanchard’s charity, founded in 1712, is now divided into three parts: the ecclesiastical portion, worth about £40 yearly, pays for a lectureship, now held by the vicar: the non-ecclesiastical portion amounts to about £32 yearly, and is applied in maintaining scholarships for higher education and for good attendance at some elementary school in the united school district of Barmby and Asselby, and for payments on the result of examinations in the catechism of the Church of England and in the Bible: the third part, amounting to £2 yearly, is divided amongst the poor. Garlthorpe’s charity, founded in 1480, now amounts to about £100 yearly net value, and is divided into the following portions, one third for the poor, one sixth for the repair of the river banks and one sixth for church repairs; of the remaining portion, £20 is given yearly to the vicar of Barmby as reading minister, and the rest is applied in providing prizes for regular attendance and good conduct at the Elementary school. Thomas Houldsworth, a native of Barmby, in 1888 purchased land in Barmby, the proceeds of which are distributed to 15 poor people twice yearly in sums of 12s. 6d. each. Tacker’s charity, derived from charges on certain land in Barmby-on-the-Marsh and producing £2 yearly, is divided every year amongst the poor of Barmby by the Parish Council. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners, who are lords of the manor, and Eric de S. S. Rudd esq. J.P. of Knedlington Manor, are the chief landowners; Eric de S. S. Rudd esq. J.P. is also lay impropriator. The soil is rich and fertile; subsoil, clay and peat. The chief crops are potatoes, wheat, barley, turnips and oats. The area is 1,474 acres of land, 65 of tidal water and 17 of foreshore; rateable value, £3,122; the population in 1911 was 344 in the civil parish, and in the ecclesiastical parish, which includes part of Bishopsoil, it was 348.

Council School (mixed), erected in 1878, for 150 children; average attendance, 78.
