Historical Description

BARMBY-ON-THE-MOOR is a parish, township and pleasant village, formerly a market town, and is on the road between Hull and York, on a rivulet which rises above the village and falls into the Derwent, about 2 miles west from Pocklington station on the York and Market Weighton section of the North Eastern railway, 11 east from York and 28 north-west from Hull, in the Howdenshire division of the Riding, petty sessional division of Wilton Beacon, Wilton Beacon division of Harthill wapentake, Pocklington union and county court district, rural deanery of Pocklington, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. The parish was given by Ulphus, an English Thane, to York Minster. The church of St. Catharine, rebuilt in 1851 on the site of an ancient edifice of Norman or still earlier date, is an edifice of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, porch, and an embattled western tower with spire rising to the height of 100 feet, and containing 3 bells: the font was the gift of the Hon. Mrs. Duncombe, and there are 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1627. The living is a vicarage, with that of Fangfoss annexed, joint net yearly value £340, including 130 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of York, and held since 1885 by the Rev. William Davison Wood Rees, of St. Bees, and surrogate. The Wesleyans and Primitive Methodists have each a chapel here. There are charities of £57 6s. 3d. yearly value. George A. Duncombe esq. of Highfield, Driffield, is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The old manor house, built 1617, is the residence of Capt. Herbert T. Cliff. The soil is rich and sandy; the subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are carrots, barley, oats, turnips and potatoes. The acreage is 2,528; rateable value, £3,255; the population in 1911 was 441 in the civil and 622 in the ecclesiastical parish.

By Local Government Board Order No. 42,567, dated Oct. 1, 1901, part of Barmby-on-the-Moor was transferred to Pocklington civil parish.

Public Elementary School (mixed), erected in 1845, for 90 children; average attendance, 76.
