Historical Description

BARNBOROUGH is a township, village and parish, including the hamlet of Harlington, in the valley terminated by the river Dearne, which separates it from Adwick and Mexborough, 6 ½ miles west from Doncaster, 3 north-east from Mexborough railway station, in the southern division of the Riding, Doncaster union, petty sessional division and county court district, south division of Strafforth and Tickhill wapentake, rural deanery of Wath. diocese and archdeaconry of York, situate a mile south of the turnpike road leading from Doncaster to Barnsley. The church of St. Peter is a stone building of the Norman period, with later additions, and consists of chancel, nave, aisles and tower with 3 bells and a clock: the church contains upon a tomb the recumbent figure of a knight, lying cross-legged, with his shield and sword; this monument, of oak, and in fine condition and dated 1350, represents Percival Cresacre, one of the ancient lords of this place; on the south side of his tomb lies the body of Alicia his wife. The register dates from the year 1554; the earliest portions are somewhat illegible but the remainder is in good condition. The living is a rectory, yearly value £640 with an excellent residence and extensive grounds, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor and held by the Rev. Wilmot Westmorland Ware, M.A. of Jesus College, Cambridge. There is a chapel for Wesleyans. There are charities of about £40 yearly value. A festival is held yearly on the Sunday nearest to St. Peter’s day. Barnborough Hall, the residence of John Hartop esq. pleasantly situated 6 ½ miles west from Doncaster, is an Elizabethan structure, with tastefully laid-out grounds admirably kept, and is interesting as having passed into the hands of John, only son of Lord Chancellor sir Thomas More, through his marriage with Anne, heiress of the ancient family of Cresacre; it is now the property of Andrew Montagu esq. Barnborough Grange, on the Dearne, continued to be occupied as a mansion as late as the early part of this century, but is now a farm-house. From a limestone cliff there is a beautiful and extensive view over the south of Yorkshire, with the church, the village and Barnborough Hall in the foreground. Barnborough was a Roman settlement. Earl Fitzwilliam and Andrew Montagu esq. are joint lords of the manor, and with Viscount Halifax, Mr. George Walker and Mr. Thomas Johnson are the chief landowners. The soil is generally clayey; subsoil gritstone. The chief crops are wheat, barley and beans. The area of the township is 1,960 acres; rateable value £3,679; and the population in 1871 was 450.

A school Board has been formed under an Order in Council, of which the rector is chairman & John Hartop esq. vice-chairman; the schools were erected on an elevated site in the centre of the village in 1878, at a cost of £2,000.

Board school, George Crumpler, master; Miss Elizabeth scaling, mistress Clerk to the school Board, W. P. Holmes.
