Historical Description

BARNBY-UPON-DON is a parish, village and township, with station on the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire railway, 5 miles north-east from Doncaster, in the southern division of the Riding, Doncaster union and county court district, south division of Strafforth and Tickhill wapentake, rural deanery of Doncaster, and diocese and archdeaconry of York. The church of SS. Peter and Paul is an ancient and capacious Gothic stone building, consisting of chancel, nave and aisles, with a square tower containing 3 bells; on the tower are the arms of the see of York: it contains some ancient monuments to the Portingtons, and especially to one Roger Portington, a warm adherent of Charles the 1st, in whose cause he spent a very large sum of money and was sentenced by Cromwell to 16 years’ imprisonment in Hull jail, but at the Restoration was released and settled here: this tablet bears his arms with three quarterings, and bears the following quaint inscription in Latin. “Approach boldly, reader, whosoe’er thou art, if an honest man and one who follows the King, but if less than that depart, lest unknowingly, and by chance, thou shouldst press with thy heel these pious ashes, for Roger Portington’s bones lying beneath can ill bear a rebel’s foot. A man of ancient lineage and faithful to his chief illustrious, broken down by plunder and imprisonment, weary of years, as it were heavy with sleep, has gone to sleep, waiting the mom of resurrection with Jane his wife, till the last trump shall sound;” to sir Thomas Hodgson, of Bramwith Hall, and bis daughter Frances Countess of Sutherland who died in 1732; to the Hon. James Bruce, son of a late Earl of Elgin and Kincardine, who was drowned in 1798 in attempting to cross the river at this place on horseback; to the Gregories, whose ancestors came in with the Saxons and established themselves at Stickhill in Warwickshire, and to some others: the church has been restored, new roofed and reseated, and a porch placed on the south side: the original screen, a good specimen of richly-carved oak and in a fair state of preservation, once converted into a reading-desk, is replaced in the chancel arch; at the east end there is a very handsome stained window to the memories of James Newsome esq. his devoted wife and eldest son, presented by their youngest son, John Henry Newsome esq.; there is also a stained window in the north aisle to the Hall family, who have resided for a long period in this parish; there is an organ in the chancel, presented by the patron; the cost of restoration was about £3,000. The register dates from the year 1599, and is in good condition. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £130, in the gift of Thomas Matthews Killam esq. of Doncaster, and held by the Rev. John Duffin B A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge. The Wesleyans and Primitive Methodists have each a chapel here. Lady Sutherland left by will £800 to be invested in land, the proceeds to be divided for the education of six poor children, natives of Barnby-upon-Don and sand Bramwith. and two shillings a week to four poor women of the same places. The late John Martin esq. of Kirk Sandall left by will £130, producing £4 per year, for the education of poor children of Barnby-upon-Don, which is included in the school endowment: there is also £5 a year arising from land, given away as a dole at Christmas, and about £20 in future for the education of poor children of this parish, according to a scheme of the Charity Commissioners, under whose sanction a school lias been erected: by the will of the late Sir Isaac Morley, the interest of £1,400 Perpetual Railway Debentures is to be given to four poor persons, male or female, each receiving one pound per calendar month one pound being also given to the minister to preach a sermon once a year on charity, and the residue to be given away in coals, bread &c. Messrs. Ross, Milnthorp and Heptonstall are lords of the manor: A. J. Smith esq. G. F. Milnthorp esq. Frederick Fisher esq. Richard Heptonstall esq. and James Dickenson esq. are the chief landowners. Sedburg school has an estate here. The soil is of a sandy character; subsoil sandy: the chief crops are turnips, barley, seeds and wheat: the area is 2,397 acres; rateable value £6,998; the population of the township in 1871 was 484 and of the parish 659.
