BARNINGHAM is a parish, township and village, pleasantly situated on a hill side, 5 miles west-southwest from Barnard Castle, 9 north-west from Richmond and 16 west from Darlington, in the Richmond division of the Riding, wapentake of West Gilling, petty sessional division of Greta Bridge, union of Teesdale, county court district of Barnard Castle, rural deanery of Richmond North, archdeaconry of Richmond and diocese of Ripon. The parish, which includes the townships of Hope and Scargill and a portion of Newsham, is bounded on the west by the Greta. The village consists of one long street of private houses and cottages, built mostly on one side of the Road up the hill from the Hall towards the moors. The view from the hill end of the village is magnificent and presents to the eye an extensive panoramic view. The village is supplied with water from springs rising on the moors by means of a pipe running right down the village and at intervals supplying small tanks, a system introduced in 1897. The church of St. Michael and All Angela, rebuilt on a new site in 1816, is a building of stone, in mixed styles, consisting of chancel nave, aisles, west porch and an embattled western tower containing one bell: in 1891 the church was thoroughly restored and remodelled at a cost of about £1,700, when the aisles were formed on each side of the nave, a new chancel arch built about 10 feet further west than the old one, and vestries provided by the erection of thin walls: the nave was re-seated, the chancel fitted With stalls and a prayer desk with carved poppy heads and a carved and panelled reredos erected, all of Austrian oak; the pulpit, also of oak, is a memorial to the Rev. Thomas Collins, rector 1816—29, and was presented by his five surviving daughters: there are numerous stained windows, including memorials to Col. Whitaker and Henry Milbank esq.; the organ was built at a cost of about £300: there is a carved screen erected as a memorial to the late Sir Frederick Acclom Milbank bart. Edwin Spencer Gough M.A. of Trinity College, Dublin, honorary canon of Ripon, rural dean of Richmond North and surrogate. The Wesleyan chapel here has an endowment of £60 yearly, left by the late Mr. John Todd. The rector distributes on behalf of the trustees a moiety of the rent (about £14) from lands left for the relief and education of the poor. A reading room with library was opened in 1869 and contains about 200 volumes. In the centre of the green is a public drinking fountain, erected in 1866 by public subscription. An annual fair has been established here for the sale of horses, cattle, sheep and geese: it is held on the first Thursday in September. Barningham Park is the seat of the Dowager Lady Milbank; the mansion is an ancient building of stone, and stands near the village in a park of 202 acres in extent. Sir P. C. J.
