Historical Description

BARNOLDSWICK is a village, township and ecclesiastical parish, embracing the hamlets of Saltersford, Coates and Brogden with Admer Gill, having a station on the Midland railway,5 miles north from Colne, 9 south-west from Skipton; it is a polling place for the Northern division of the Riding, in the east division of Staincliff and Ewcross wapentake, Skipton union, petty sessional division and county court district, western division of Craven rural deanery, archdeaconry of Craven, diocese of Ripon, situated on the Leeds and Liverpool canal. The parish church of St. Mary-le-Gill, situated in the hamlet of Coates on a beck or gill which divides Barnoldswick from Thornton, is a building of stone in the Norman style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles and tower with 3 bells, several stained glass windows, and a handsome carved stone font. The registers date from the year 1535. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £320, with residence, in the gift of Josiah lreson esq. and held by the Rev. Thomas Hayes B.A. of St. John’s college, Cambridge. The church or chapel of St. James is a plain stone building, with tower and 1 bell, and was erected in 1842 to meet the wants of this wide and populous parish. The Wesleyans, Baptists, Free Gospellers and Primitive Methodists have each a chapel here. There is also a Baptist chapel at Salterforth. another dissenting chapel and a Friends’ meeting-house. Here are several limestone quarries which are extensively worked. Cotton spinning is the staple trade, two firms employing over 2,000 persons. William Roundell esq. and F. W. Bagsbawe esq. are the chief landowners. The land is chiefly used as pasture; subsoil limestone. The population of the entire parish (1871) 3,819, and the area is 6,306 acres; rateable value, £7,675 6s. 3d.; the area of the township is 2,129 acres; population (1871) 3,187.
