Historical Description

BARTON is a township, parish and village, near the great Roman road, called Watling street, between Catterick Bridge and Piercebridge in the county of Durham, about 4 miles west from Croft station on the York and Darlington section of the North Eastern railway, 5 ½ west-south-west from Darlington and 6 ¾ north-east from Richmond, in the Richmond division of the Riding, wapentake and petty sessional division of East Gilling, union and county court district of Darlington, rural deanery of East Richmond, archdeaconry of Richmond and diocese of Ripon. The Merrybent branch of the North Eastern railway runs from Merrybent (about half a mile from Barton) through Barton to Darlington, about 7 miles; it conveys stone and goods only. The church of St. Cuthbert (old chapelries, St. Cuthbert with St. Mary), built in 1840, at a cost of about £1,000, and consecrated 7 sept. 1841, is an edifice of stone in the Norman and Gothic styles, with a south-western tower containing 3 bells: the east and west and three other windows are stained and there is an ancient brass to Thomas Dodswortli, of Barton, d. 1651: in 1910 the interior of the church was entirely reconstructed and reseated; there are 250 sittings, all free. The register dates from the year 1582. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £220, with about 40 acres of glebe and residence, in the alternate presentation of the vicars of Gilling and Stan wick St. John and held since 1898 by the Rev. Ferdinand Friederich Rudolph Downie L.th, of Durham University. A tithe rent-charge of 123 12s. the value of which is now £75, is payable to the vicar of Gilling, who in turn pays £10 annually to the vicar of Barton, who also receives £10 yearly from the vicar of Stanwick St. John. There is a small Wesleyan chapel here, and also two Working Men’s Clubs, with reading rooms and libraries. The yearly value of the charities is £12. In this parish is a limestone quarry, yielding a plentiful supply of stone, but of varied quality. Brettanby-Manor is the residence of Charles Lawrence Pemberton Robinson esq. Sir Henry S. M. Havelock-Allan bart. of Blackwell Grange, Darlington, lord of the manor, and C. L. P. Robinson esq. are the chief landowners. The soil is strong loamy gravel upon limestone. The chief crops are wheat, oats, seeds and turnips. The township contains 2,449 acres; rateable value, £4,232; in 1911 the population was 558, and in the ecclesiastical parish, 662.

Public Elementary school for 140 boys & girls; average attendance, 110; for the maintenance of the building there are the dividends from 600 given by the late Mrs. Charge & £100 by the late Miss Bell, also a sum of 6 6s. yearly from Harrison’s charity; the school further has the Smithson bequest of 50s. yearly for the education of six poor boys, & 50s. when required as apprentice fees for the said boys.
