Historical Description

BARTON-LE-STREET is a township, parish, village and station on the Thirsk and Malton branch of the North Eastern railway, and is 4 ½ miles west-by-north from Malton, in the Thirsk and Malton division of the Riding, Ryedale wapentake, Malton union, petty sessional division and county court district, rural deanery of Helmsley, archdeaconry of Cleveland and diocese of York. The church of St. Michael is an ancient edifice in the Norman style, consisting of chancel, nave, north porch, organ chamber and a western turret containing 2 bells, recast and presented by the Hon. Mrs. Meynell Ingram in 1888: of the 90 ancient corbel stones formerly on the outside 84 are now in a similar position within the building; the north porch is constructed from the two old north and south doorways, and the hood-moulding, composed of 12 stones, is enriched in varied and remarkable Norman sculptures, and some probably of Saxon date; the arch inside the porch is similarly ornamented, as well as several stones removed from the jambs of the south doorway: built into the exterior wall of the nave, inside the porch, are 8 slabs, bearing carved representations of the “Nativity,” ithe “Adoration of the Magi,” and various figures: and other ancient sculptures have been incorporated in the capitals and elsewhere; there also remains a portion of an ancient and interesting series of carvings representing the different months of the year; the chancel retains its original Norman piscina, with drain and shaft, and is richly carved; the richly carved oak pulpit, the font-of Caen stone, on alabaster shafts, and the reredos are modern, but of good design; the whole of the fittings are of oak; the chancel windows were filled with stained glass at the time of the rebuilding; and there are memorial windows to Francis Carr, d. 1873, and his wife Elizabeth, and to Elizabeth Borton, d. 1874: a fine traceried 15th century screen was erected and elegant panelling fixed round the nave on St. Peter’s Day, 1904, to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the present rector, the beautifully painted organ-case was designed by Mr. Temple Moore; in the nave is a brass to the late Rev. Charles Hodgson, 36 years rector, d. 1869; and in the chancel a monument to Hugo Francis Meynell Ingram, d. May, 1871, at whose cost the church was restored in 1871, under the direction of Messrs. Perkins and sons, architects, of Leeds; there is also a brass in memory of the Hon. Mrs. Meynell Ingram, lady of the manor, d. Dec. 21st, 1904: there are sittings for 200 persons. In the churchyard, near the vestry door, stands the base of a cross of pre-conquest date. The register dates from the year 1600. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £358, including 88 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Hon. E. F. L. Wood, and held since 1894 by the Rev. Harry Ernest Ketchley M.A. of Christ Church, Oxford, and surrogate. This place was a Roman Settlement and there have been two or three finds of Roman pottery in the parish of late years. The Hon. E. F. Lindley Wood, of Temple Newsam, Leeds, is lord of the manor and sole landowner. The soil is limestone and clay; subsoil, limestone rock, clay and in some parts sand. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley and turnips. The area of the township is 1,674 acres; rateable value, £1,472; the population in 1911 was 164, and of the ecclesiastical parish, 355.
