Historical Description

At Berwick-in-Elmet, three miles west from Aberford, is said to have been a villa of the Northumbrian kings, situate near the source of the Cock or Coker: and not far from it was a famous stone quarry, called Petres Post, as affording stone for the magnificent church at York given by the Vavasors, owners of the quarry, who had a seat at Hesselwood.

BARWICK-IN-ELMET, with the hamlets of Kiddal, Potterton, Scholes, Barrowby, Barnbow, and part of Whinmoor, is a large parish, in the Eastern division of the Riding, lower division of the wapentake of Skyrack, county court district and union of Tadcaster, rural deanery of Whitkirk, archdeaconry of Craven and diocese of Ripon, 7 miles east-north-east from Leeds: the nearest railway station is at Scholes, on the Leeds and Wetherby line, about 1 ½ miles distant. The church of All saints is an old building, originally Saxon, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles and a square embattled tower containing clock and 3 bells, the large bell dated 1604, the other two having been recast in 1844: the church was restored in 1856: the font is of stone, reproduced from a fragment of an old one found embedded in the floor of the church. The register dates from 1656 and is in good condition. The living is a rectory, yearly value £800, in the gift of the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, and held by the Rev. Charles Augustus Hope M.A. of Exeter College, Oxford. The charities amount to £18 yearly. Col. Frederick C. T. Gascoigne, who is lord of the manor, and Bathurst Edward Wilkinson esq. J.P. of Potterton Hall, are the chief landowners. The soil is limestone, rock and clay; subsoil marl. The chief crops are wheat, barley and turnips. The township contains 6,965 acres of land; the population (1871) 1,884. The entire parish, including Roundhay, contains 8,448 acres, and a population in 1871 of 2,467; rateable value £12,367.
