Historical Description
Bawtry is a small market-town, four miles east of Tickhill, and nine southeast from Doncaster, situated on the edge of Yorkshire, a few of the houses standing in Nottinghamshire. The town is handsome and well built: the street through which runs the great North Road from London to York, is remarkably broad, and contains several elegant houses. The upper part of this street is the marketplace, in which are very good shambles. The market was formerly held on Wednesday, but has been recently changed for Thursday. The population of Bawtry was returned at 918. The town stands on an eminence, gently sloping towards the north and east towards the river Idle, navigable for small craft. On the western side of the town the ground is high; but the marshes on the eastern side are subject to frequent inundations. The elegant mansion of the Countess of Galway, in this town, is built of brick, and has an extensive front towards the south. It stands on the west side of the great North Road, and would make a noble appearance, if it was not almost concealed by a lofty brick wall. The pleasure-grounds are extensive; and in a little beautiful area surrounded with shrubs is an elegant menagerie, stocked with Chinese pheasants, and other curious birds.
At the distance of one mile from Bawtry, on the great North Road, is the village of Scrooby, remarkable for having had a palace belonging to the Archbishops of York, who are still lords of the manor. Scrooby was a hunting-seat, the favourite residence of Archbishop Savage, in the reign of Henry VII. In the next reign it was the occasional residence of Cardinal Wolsey; and in Queen Elizabeth’s reign Archbishop Sandys sometimes resided here. The palace stood in a very damp and low situation, where the Ryton joins the river Idle. The large gateway and porter’s lodge were taken down towards the end of the last century, and the only remaining part of this large palace has been many years since converted into a farmhouse.
A little to the northwest of Bawtry, and near a farmhouse called Marton, are some ridges, the supposed remains of a camp; however, some ancient weapons, and other indications of a battle, have been found in the grounds adjacent.
BAWTRY, situated on a slight eminence, gradually sloping towards the Idle, which divides Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire, and near the Roman road from Littleborough to Doncaster, is a small market town and township, constituting with Austerfield an ecclesiastical parish, formed from that of Blyth (Notts) by an order of the Queen in Council, dated July 31, 1858; it has a station on the Great Northern railway, 148 miles from Loudon, 8 ½ south-by-east from Doncaster, 43 south-by-east from York and 20 east-north-east from Sheffield, and is a polling place for the southern division of the Riding, in the wapentake of Strafforth and Tickhill, Doncaster union and county court district, rural deanery of Retford, archdeaconry of Nottingham and diocese of Lincoln: the Great North road passes through the parish. The town is partially paved, lighted with gas, and supplied with water from springs and the river. High street, the chief thoroughfare, is wide and contains many handsome and well-built houses. The river Idle is navigable for craft of from twelve to twenty-four tons’ burthen. The church of St. Nicholas is a stone building in the Norman style, erected in the reign of Henry II. and repaired by subscription in 1839, consisting of chancel, nave and aisles; the tower, which is strengthened by buttresses and surmounted by pinnacles, being an addition, in 1712; it contains 6 bells and clock. The register dates from the year 1653 and is in good condition. The living is a vicarage, in the gift of Trinity College, Cambridge, and held by the Rev. Augustus Dobree Carey M.A. formerly fellow of that college. The benefice is endowed with tithe rent-charges amounting to £300 a year, including two rent-charges of £64 10s. issuing from Bawtry and Austerfield respectively, and formerly belonging to the vicarage of Blyth; it is further endowed with all mortuaries, surplice fees and other payments heretofore paid to the vicar of Blyth. and when taken by a fellow vacating his fellowship is augmented out of the funds of the college by an annual grant of £200, thus raising the living to £500 a year. The chapel of the hospital of St. Mary Magdalen, situated in the parish of Harworth. Notts, was restored for divine service in 1832; the master of the hospital is the Rev. Francis Foulkes, of St. Bees. There are Wesleyan, Primitive Methodist and Congregational chapels. There are two almshouses called the “Bell Houses/' endowed in 1780 by Elizabeth Foster, with a yearly rent-charge of £1 out of a close of land at Misson, for the residence of two poor women. A Mutual Improvement society has been established for the benefit of the working classes. A fair is held on the 23rd November and on the Thursday after Whit Sunday. Bawtry Hall, the property of Lord Houghton, is the residence of Lazarus T. Baines esq. J.P. and is situated at the southern extremity of the town, in the midst of extensive and beautiful pleasure-grounds. Lord Houghton is lord of the manor and the principal landowner. The soil is sand and gravel; subsoil, gravel and sea sand. The chief crops are wheat, barley, rye and turnips. The population of the township in 1871 was 930, and the area is 259 acres; rateable value, £4,637; the area of the ecclesiastical parish is 3,020 acres; the population in 1871 was 1,343.
Schools
Boys’, erected by subscription 1822, had formerly an annuity of £1 13s. given by F. H. Cartwright esq. in 1833, which, however, has not been paid for many years; John William Taylor, master.
Girls’ sf Infants’, erected in 1857, also by subscription; Miss Mary Louisa Carr, mistress.
