Historical Description
Bedale, a small market-town, situate on a rivulet that runs into the river Swale, near Galenby. This place is famous for the breed of horses. The market is on Tuesday.
BEDALE is a union and market town, township and parish, in a rich valley, on the south side of a stream or rivulet called Bedale Beck, which flows into the river swale, having a station on the Leyburn and Bedale branch of the North Eastern railway, 6 miles north-north-east from Masham, 8 south-west from Northallerton, 30 northwest from York, 12 north-north-west from Ripon, 12 south-east from Richmond, 10 east from Leyburn, 16 north-west from Thirsk and 223 from London, and is in the Richmond division of the Riding, wapentake and petty sessional division of Hang East, county court district of Northallerton, rural deanery of East Catterick, archdeaconry of Richmond and diocese of Ripon. The town is lighted with gas from works established in 1836. The Bedale and Aiskew Water Works were opened by Lady Beresford-Peirse on 2 March, 1911; the available supply is 90,460 gallons per day, and the consumption about 6,500 gallons per day.
The church of St. Gregory is an ancient edifice of stone in the Early Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and a massive embattled western tower with pinnacles, containing a clock and 8 bells: at the west end of the church, on the north side, are two recumbent effigies, one, in alabaster, of Sir Brian Fitz-Alan and the other, of stone, to his lady: on the south side are two other recumbent figures of stone in mailed armour: there as also, in a recess in the north aisle, a recumbent effigy, much decayed, representing Thomas Fitz-Alan, one of the earliest rectors of the parish: the stained east window was presented by the Rev. John Joseph Thomas Monson M.A. in memory of the 50 years spent here by himself and his father as rectors of the parish, and there are memorial windows to the Hon. and Rev. Thomas Monson, rector, d. 3 April, 1843, William Henry Buckle R.N. d. 1855, the Rev. J. J. T. Monson M.A. rector and chaplain to the late Queen Victoria, d. 31 July, 1861, and to Elizabeth Ann Monson, his wife; to Henry Dover esq. and to Ann Gibson Firth, d. 29 May, 1890 the stained west window was presented in 1855 by Admiral Octavius Vernon Harcourt and Anne Danby Harcourt, his wife, and there are many other stained windows: in the sanctuary are marble tablets to the Monson family, and others in the south aisle belonging to the Peirse and Beresford families, besides a handsome marble monument with figures, by Westmacott, to the late Henry Peirse esq. of Bedale, and his daughter, Harriet Elizabeth, wife of Vice-admiral Sir J. P. Beresford K.C.B., G.C.H., d. 1825. The church was restored in 1854 and again in 1908, and the tower and bells in 1874, at a cost of £600: oak screens were erected by the parishioners in 1901 in the north and south arches of the chancel, at a cost of £150, in memory of the Rev. John George Beresford, rector, 1861-09, and a brass lectern was presented in March, 1900, by Mrs. Beresford-Peirse, in memory of her husband and three sons: a carved oak pulpit was added in 1908, and in 1912 a reredos and altar of carved oak; in the same year the eastern walls of the chancel were cavered with 16th century carved pannelling: an addition to the churchyard was also made in 1900 by Sir Henry Beresford-Peirse bart.: the church affords 800 sittings. The registers date from the year 1560. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £830, including 200 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of sir H. Monson de la Poer Beresford-Peirse bart. and held since 1899 by the Rev. Windham de la Poer Beresford-Peirse M.A. of Keble College, Oxford, who is also hon. chaplain to the Bedale union, and surrogate.
The Wesleyan chapel here was erected in 1888, at a cost of £1,700, and has 300 sittings. The Baptist chapel was erected in 1878 at a cost of about £1,500.
The Town Hall, erected in 1840, comprises a large room, now used for entertainments.
The Public Assembly Room occupies the upper floor of a substantial edifice of red brick, with stone dressings, erected in 1862, and will hold about 280 persons; it is now the property of Sir H. M. de la Poer Beresford-Peirse bart.
There is a Young Men’s Institute, supported by subscription, with an attached library of nearly 3,000 volumes.
The market is held on Tuesday for corn, meat, poultry, butter, vegetables &c. and is well attended, and on alternate Tuesdays a cattle market and fat stock sale, established in 1837.
The charities include a hospital for six poor men, founded in 1698 by Peter Samwaies D.D. a former rector of the parish; this hospital has an endowment of 68 6s. yearly. There is also a hospital for three poor widows, founded in 1667 by Richard and Thomas Young, with an endowment of 23 14s. yearly. The yearly amount of charities arising from other benefactions for the township is £70 5s. 8d.; and there is one for the parish in general of £1 12s.
Bedale Hall, the property of Sir Henry Monson de la Poer Beresford-Peirse bart. now the residence of Sir Arthur Tredgold Lawson bart. is a mansion of stone, containing among other apartments a fine drawing-room, added in 1738, 60 feet long, 30 wide and 30 feet high, the walls and ceiling of which are richly embellished with ornamental work in has-relief: the mansion stands in a park of upwards of a hundred acres, abounding with fine specimens of lime, beech and oak, and has an avenue of old walnut trees: there are also well laid out pleasure grounds.
Sir H. M. de la Poer Beresford-Peirse bart. is lord of the manor and principal landowner.
Bedale parish consists of the townships of Bedale, Aiskew, Burrill-with-Cowling, Crakehall (Great and Little), Firby, Langthorpe and East Brompton, also Rand Grange township, which was formerly extra-parochial. The townships of Crakehall and Langthorne-with-Brompton have been united into a chapelry, called Crakehall chapelry.
The Area of Bedale is 1,683 acres; rateable value, £5,888; the population in 1911 was 1,163, including 4 officers and 26 inmates in the workhouse, and in the ecclesiastical parish in 1911, 2,269.
Petty sessions are held at the Court house, Aiskew, every alternate Tuesday at 11 a.m.

The Workhouse, erected in 1839, is of stone, & will hold 100 inmates, but the average number is about 30.

SCHOOLS
The Grammar school, founded in 1584, and now a secondary school, was endowed by Queen Elizabeth with a sum of £6 7s. 4d. per annum. Frances Countess of Warwick & W. Heaton esq. augmented the endowment to the extent of £13 6s. 8d. The old building, situated within the churchyard, bears the date 1674, but in 1887 a new school in the Tudor Gothic style was erected by subscription in Wycar. The school is entitled to compete for the Ackroyd scholarship & for the Lady Elizabeth Hastings exhibitions at Queens College, Oxford. There are about 25 boys. The select vestry of Bedale are the governors, the rector being chairman.

Erected in 1846, & enlarged in 1884 & 1897, for 311 children; average attendance, 240; the school has an endowment of £6 11s. 8d. arising out of land.
