Historical Description

BENTHAM is a market town, parish, polling place for the Northern division of the Riding, and station on the Midland railway, 9 ½ miles north-west from settle and 240 from London, in the west division of Staincliff and Ewcross wapentake, county court district of Kirkby Lonsdale, petty sessional division of Ewcross, union of settle, rural deanery of Clapham, archdeaconry of Richmond, diocese of Ripon and province of York, and consists of the townships of Bentham and Ingleton; the former comprising High and Low Bentham and Mewith. The town is situated on the river Wenning, the scenery around and throughout the whole district being strikingly beautiful and abounding in hills, dales, mountains and rivers. The parish church of St. John the Baptist, situated at Low Bentham, is of considerable interest to the antiquarian, occupying at it does the site of the only church in this locality mentioned in Domesday book; the tower, containing a fine peal of 6 bells, and lithographed for the Liverpool Architectural society, is considered a gem in its way, and dates from the time of Henry VII.: the church has been thoroughly restored by R. Norman Shaw esq. of London; the chancel at the expense of the widow of the late Alfred Foster esq. of Hornby Castle, and the body of The chinch by the incumbent and friends; the church has a beautiful reredos, several memorial windows, and a magnificent organ built by Mr. Abbot of Leeds in 1872: there are brasses to Stephen Husband (1683), the Rev. C. Featherstone, formerly rector of Bentham (1853), and the Rev. Thomas Lupton, rector of Bentham for 56 years, who died May, 171 9/20, as well as to his wife, but who died in 1696; there is also a monument to the family of Garnet, but the inscription is now scarcely legible. The register dates from the year 1673, but is not in good condition. The living is a rectory, yearly value £700, with residence, in the gift of Walter Joy esq. of Harrogate, and held by the Rev. Edgar Sherlock M.A. of Emmanuel College, Cambridge. High Bentham has recently been formed into a separate ecclesiastical parish. The living is a vicarage, endowed by the present rector of Bentham, assisted by the Ecclesiastical Commissioners with an income of £200 a; ear, and held by the Rev. James Louis Holbeck. The church of St. Margaret’s, High Bentham, a stone structure, containing a beautiful stained window, was built by the late Mr. Roughsedge of Bentham house, and is commandingly situated at the top of a high hill. There is a Catholic chapel, and one for Wesleyan Methodists, with school attached, built in 1859. The society of Friends have a meeting house near Low Bentham, with estate attached, and another at High Bentham, built in 1864. There are Reading roams and Libraries at both High and Low Bentham. A charity of £20 left by Mrs. Langstaff is distributed yearly among poor persons not in receipt of parochial relief. There are almshouses for six men and six women, each of whom receives 6s. weekly, under the same foundation. The market is held on Wednesdays for agricultural produce, and a cattle fair every other Monday. There are linen manufactories at High Bentham, carried on by the Bentham Mills Company Limited, which gives employment to several hundred persons. The Ridding, the seat of Joseph Teale esq. J.P. Situated near Low Bentham, is a modern structure of stone, charmingly placed on the brow of a wooded hill, commanding scenery of surpassing loveliness and surrounded by a park comprising about 30 acres. William Foster esq. is lord of the manor of Mewith. The principal landowners are J. Teale esq. J.P. Mrs. Rice, George Sedgwick esq. H. R. Ford esq. Christopher Wilcock esq. James Harrison esq. Giles Bateson esq. and T. B. P. Ford esq. The soil is loamy; subsoil sandstone. The land is chiefly pasture. The population of Bentham township (1871), 2,237, and the area, 7,711 acres; rateable value, £10.150. The population of the parish is 4,778; the area, 25,219 acres, or 40 square miles; rateable value, £9,351.

Schools

The Grammar school was founded in 1726 by William Collingwood, sc is managed by trustees under a scheme prepared by the Charity Commissioners in accordance with the Endowed schools Acts of 1873 &1874. The total income amounts to £350, of which £200 is appropriated to the Grammar school, the remainder being divided amongst various Elementary schools; Rev. Robert Bourne B.A. London, headmaster.

National school, at Low Bentham, receives £50 a year from the Grammar school funds (for boys sc girls), Thos. Hardwick, master; Mrs. Thomas Hardwick, mistress.

National school, High Bentham (girls & infants), receives £40 a year from the Grammar school funds.

The Elementary school, in connection with the Grammar school, receives from its funds £60 yearly.
